This position provides comprehensive clinical sensorimotor evaluation and visual assessment of ophthalmology patients with ocular motility dysfunction or related neuromuscular anomalies. Services include diagnostic evaluation, planning, teaching, participation in research, and implementing appropriate orthoptic treatment programs and follow-up for selected patients under the supervision of the attending physician. Duties & Responsibilities
- Evaluate assigned patients in terms of current or potential problems with vision, muscle balance, binocular sensory relationships, or related ocular disorders. Provide fundamental assessment of fusional ability and potential, including use of specific diagnostic instruments.
- Plan and implement treatment programs for selected patients based on evaluation results.
- Evaluate ongoing therapy, institute appropriate changes in the management plan and provide instruction to parents and patients regarding the rationale and methods necessary to carry out therapy.
- Conduct an orthoptic clinic that includes a referral base from internal and external ophthalmologists.
- Teach, give didactic lectures, and provide clinical instruction to residents, fellows, and students, and participate in assigned clinics, rounds, meetings, conferences, and in-services, including educational activities for the ophthalmology team.
- Comply with the American Orthoptic Council (AOC) Code of Ethics.
- Administer eye drops under the direction of the physician and maintain medication supply with compliance to medication expiration and pharmacy requirements.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
- Bachelor's degree in science or related field, plus 2 years in a post-graduate program and a minimum of 2 years of experience is preferred.
- Board certification by the American Association of Certified Orthoptists is required.
- Comprehensive knowledge of ophthalmology, ocular anatomy, neuro-anatomy, and pharmacologic agents used in ophthalmology.
- JCAHPO certification is preferred.
