Speak Up for Kids works to mitigate the trauma and cultivate the self-worth of children living in foster care. Through a network of volunteers, student leaders, and community partners, the organization provides practical support, meaningful experiences, and advocacy that help foster youth and caregivers thrive. Its work focuses on five key areas: empowering students to lead advocacy and service initiatives providing essential resources and milestone celebrations for children in care equipping youth with life skills needed for independence supporting foster parents and caregivers to stabilize placements strengthening the child welfare system through education, engagement, and community collaboration Together, these efforts help create dignity, stability, and opportunity for children navigating foster care. Key Responsibilities Youth Advocacy Intern Speak Up for Kids Palm Beach County Position Overview Youth Advocacy Interns play an important behind-the-scenes role in supporting the mission of Speak Up for Kids: to mitigate trauma and cultivate self-worth for youth navigating the foster care system. Interns contribute to projects that strengthen resources, raise awareness, and support the programs that serve foster youth, caregivers, and the broader community. This internship provides hands-on experience in nonprofit operations, advocacy, communication, and program support while allowing students to build meaningful skills and contribute to real-world impact. Key Responsibilities Researching and creating educational content for the Life Skills Portal , which equips foster youth with practical tools for adulthood (This would entail writing articles, creating infographics, and producing short videos designed to educate and empower youth in care). Assisting with podcast production including topic research, script development, editing, blurb writing, outreach, and promotion. Supporting community outreach and awareness efforts , including social media and advocacy initiatives. Assisting with event preparation and volunteer coordination for community programs and fundraisers. Helping organize digital resources, program materials, and internal project tracking. Participating in team meetings, trainings, and collaborative projects with other interns and staff. Learning Opportunities Nonprofit program development and operations Child advocacy and foster care systems Digital media and content creation Project management and collaboration in remote teams Community outreach and volunteer engagement Professional communication and accountability Expectations Commit 5–10 hours per week (or hours required for school credit) Submit weekly check-in with updates and hours submission Maintain consistent communication with supervisors and project leads Complete assigned trainings and learning opportunities Demonstrate professionalism, initiative, and reliability Ideal Candidates Students interested in human services, nonprofit work, education, social work, communications, or advocacy (school credit interns welcome and will be on a different track) Written communication and organizational skills Self-directed and dependable in a remote work environment Passion for serving vulnerable youth and strengthening communities Internship Details Unpaid internship Flexible scheduling Remote and hybrid opportunities available Eligible for community service hours or school credit School Credit Internship: This internship is typically run in conjunction with a school program for college course credit – We are limited on the types of school credit internships – each opportunity would need to be reviewed individually in order to assess the school/course requirements and whether we have the staff and ability to meet those standards. Community Service Internship: This internship is with STUDENTS Speak Up for Kids working behind the scenes to support our programs administratively with marketing, content creation such as writing/video creation, coaching, teaching, and other needed tasks. Typically, we like to match projects with students according to their strengths and passions. Any Other Requirements: Background check will be required for school credit interns.
