Job Description This position is responsible for routine maintenance and repair of Advanced Meter Infrastructure (AMI) water meters under general supervision. The role involves a mix of mechanical, electrical, and computer work to ensure accurate meter readings and efficient water service. Responsibilities Install, repair, and maintain AMI water meters and water valves, including testing of meters and fire hydrant meters. Interpret meters, gauges, maps, and profiles; perform flow tests and troubleshoot related problems. Conduct general maintenance on machinery, including checks, refills, fluid changes, belts, hoses, and safety features on trucks, pumps, and equipment. Respond to customer service requests such as water shutoffs, AMI meter reads, leak inspections, and post notices at physical locations. Review plans and specifications for work assignments; prepare, receive, read, and complete various forms, correspondence, reports, and work orders. Operate a variety of equipment and mechanical tools for installation and replacement of legacy and AMI water meter equipment. Utilize AMI software to install, program, read, troubleshoot, diagnose, inspect, and replace AMI meters and transmitting devices. Inspect AMI meters for damage and defects; perform mounting installations on meter lids, walls, and poles. Act as a member of a confined‑space entry team, serving as entrant, attendant, or team lead when required. Maintain accurate records of AMI meter readings and troubleshooting data via personal computer using word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and other software. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of water meter maintenance, federal, state, local laws, city practices, policies, and procedures. Understanding of safety practices and procedures; ability to work in hazardous environments and confined spaces. Knowledge and ability to work with technology, computers, spreadsheets, databases, and various software. Knowledge of wire splicing, gel cap installation, and pairing of Bluetooth communication devices; basic RF propagation transmissions. Skill in oral and written communication; handling multiple tasks and prioritizing; data analysis and problem solving. Ability to operate power tools, read diagrams and technical drawings, and follow written and verbal instructions. Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with city employees and the public. Physical ability to work in confined spaces up to 100 feet deep, climb ladders up to 20 feet, lift and carry equipment up to 50 pounds unassisted, and work in hazardous environments. Minimum Qualifications Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent. Three (3) years of experience in a field related to construction, maintenance, or operations. At least one (1) year of experience repairing or maintaining water or related systems. Licenses and Certifications Required Valid Texas Class "C" driver license. Must obtain a Class D Water License issued by TCEQ within twelve (12) months of hire. Class C Water Distribution License required before expiration of the Class D license. Preferred Qualifications Experience with water meter repair, exchange, testing, or reading from 5/8" domestic to 10" commercial meters. Experience with AMI meter maintenance and using related tools (air compressor, motorized pump, hand/ power tools). Experience with computer maintenance management systems and GIS programs.
