Director of Finance And Accounting

The Role

The Director of Finance & Accounting will serve as the main accounting and finance leader. This person will be responsible for managing the company’s day-to-day accounting operations, financial reporting, cash flow tracking, payroll coordination, project-level accounting, and overall financial organization.

This role is ideal for someone who is both detail-oriented and strategic — someone who can manage the books, produce accurate financial statements, improve processes, identify opportunities for efficiency, and communicate clearly with ownership, management, outside CPAs, attorneys, banks, vendors, and other key partners.

The right candidate will be comfortable taking ownership of the accounting process and helping bring structure, discipline, and better financial visibility to a growing real estate and land development company.

Core Responsibilities

Accounting & Financial Management

• Lead and manage the company’s accounting function across day-to-day operations
• Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, deposits, vendor payments, and general ledger activity
• Manage bank reconciliations, credit card reconciliations, expense tracking, journal entries, and accruals
• Prepare accurate monthly and quarterly financial statements for ownership and management
• Provide reporting on cash flow, balance sheet activity, income statements, and other key financial metrics
• Help maintain clean, organized, and accurate books across the company
• Track financial activity across multiple entities, communities, projects, and bank accounts

Real Estate & Development Accounting

• Track costs by community, project, property, or entity as needed
• Support development accounting, including roads, utilities, amenities, engineering, legal, marketing, sales commissions, and other project-level costs
• Assist with lot sale closings, settlement statements, commission payments, closing proceeds, and related accounting entries
• Coordinate with attorneys, title companies, brokers, lenders, banks, and internal team members as needed
• Work alongside the closing coordinator and broader team to ensure transactions are properly documented and recorded

Reporting, Cash Flow & Financial Visibility

• Provide ownership and management with timely, clear, and useful financial reporting
• Help improve visibility into company cash flow, project costs, operating expenses, and financial performance
• Identify opportunities to streamline reporting, consolidate processes, and reduce unnecessary spend
• Develop and maintain internal reporting tools, schedules, and processes that help management make better decisions
• Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning as needed

Payroll, Vendor & Administrative Accounting

• Manage or coordinate payroll, pay stubs, employee reimbursements, and related payroll records
• Maintain vendor records, W-9s, 1099s, insurance certificates, invoices, contracts, and payment documentation
• Help prepare year-end 1099s and other accounting-related filings
• Coordinate with outside CPAs and tax advisors by collecting, organizing, and providing the documents needed for tax preparation
• Support property tax tracking, business filings, lender requests, and other compliance-related items as needed

Systems & Process Improvement

• Use QuickBooks as the primary accounting platform and help maintain clean, accurate, and organized records
• Utilize Excel to build, maintain, and improve financial schedules, reports, reconciliations, and tracking tools
• Work with Microsoft Office, DocuSign, online banking platforms, and other business systems as needed
• Identify ways to improve accounting workflows, internal controls, documentation, and reporting processes
• Help create a more efficient, organized, and scalable accounting function for the company
• Experience with other accounting, reporting, payroll, or project-cost systems is a plus, especially in real estate, construction, or development environments

Preferred Skills & Qualifications

• CPA strongly preferred
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required
• Strong accounting foundation with the ability to own the full accounting process
• Experience with QuickBooks required
• Strong Excel skills required
• Experience with real estate, land development, construction, project accounting, or job-cost accounting strongly preferred
• Ability to prepare and explain monthly and quarterly financial statements
• Comfortable working with ownership, management, CPAs, attorneys, banks, vendors, and other outside partners
• Strong attention to detail, organization, and follow-through
• Ability to manage multiple entities, projects, accounts, and priorities
• Clear communicator who can translate numbers into useful information for management
• Proactive mindset with the ability to improve processes, create structure, and identify efficiencies

What Success Looks Like

In the first 3–6 months, the Director of Finance & Accounting will take ownership of the accounting process and become a trusted financial resource for ownership and management. They will help strengthen reporting, improve financial visibility, organize accounting workflows, and provide timely monthly and quarterly financial statements.

The right person will bring structure and confidence to the company’s accounting function, help identify opportunities for efficiency and cost savings, and give management a clearer understanding of cash flow, project costs, and overall financial performance.
