Job Description Capitol Clinic – 675 W. Washington Avenue, Madison, Wisconsin, United States of America The Behavioral Health Substance Use Disorder Registered Nurse (SUD RN) works collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team of addiction medicine physicians, advanced practice providers, certified substance abuse counselors and other staff to coordinate, support and deliver evidence‑based, high‑quality substance use disorder treatment. The SUD RN supports practitioners and patients by managing communication, providing medication education, assisting with refills, performing triage and safety assessments, completing prior authorizations, handling referrals and labs, and coordinating with other healthcare providers. The SUD RN responds to urgent requests, provides screening and triage assessments as needed, and works under general supervision of the Director for Behavioral Health and the Medical Director – Substance Use Disorder. The RN may also provide cross‑coverage to behavioral health or primary care departments as staffing and patient needs dictate. Qualifications Current licensure as a registered nurse (RN) in Wisconsin or a multistate compact state. Bachelor’s degree in Nursing preferred but not required. Two years of professional nursing experience; experience in a substance use disorder or crisis intervention setting preferred. Strong interest in working with people with substance use disorders required. Valid Wisconsin driver’s license and personal transportation for travel to multiple sites required. Valid CPR/AED certification; certification required within four months of hire. Knowledge of nursing principles in substance use disorders, behavioral health, and/or primary care; current understanding of nursing trends and techniques. Participation in relevant continuing education courses. Knowledge of medications for substance use disorders strongly preferred. Ability to work independently and collaboratively with prescribers, therapists, counselors, other health providers, and community agencies. Excellent problem‑solving, analytical, communication, and listening skills. Ability to educate patients/families on substance use disorder issues and provide support and instruction on proper care, treatments, and follow‑up. Within six months of hire, ability to perform crisis risk assessment, crisis intervention strategies, medication monitoring, history of substance use, and injections. Ability and willingness to coordinate services in addition to providing direct services. Excellent interpersonal skills, cultural competence, and ability to work with a diverse patient population. Knowledge of interviewing practices and techniques for gathering information. Ability to work some evening hours. Knowledge of medical records, documentation, patient confidentiality, HIPAA, and basic reimbursement/insurance practices. Computer literacy with MS Office, electronic medical records (EpicCare preferred), and scheduling applications; typing speed of at least 30 WPM with minimal errors. Physical requirements: lift up to 10 pounds routinely, up to 50 pounds occasionally, and be able to climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, bend, reach, stand and sit for prolonged periods.
