Position Title Assistant Professor, Clinical Faculty Appointment (CFA) Department Hospital Medicine Division Internal Medicine Reports to (Position): Chair of the Department of Hospital Medicine MISSION STATEMENT The mission of UT MD Anderson is to eliminate cancer in Texas, the nation, and the world through outstanding programs that integrate patient care, research and prevention, and through education for undergraduate and graduate students, trainees, professionals, employees and the public. SUMMARY The primary purpose of the Assistant Professor (CFA) position is to provide expert clinical care to patients, participate in translational and or/clinical research, and participate in the teaching and training of fellows, residents, and students. This is a faculty position responsible to the Chair of the Department of Hospital Medicine who reports to the Head of the Division of Internal Medicine. The Assistant Professor, CFA, will focus most of his/her clinical activity in the Inpatient Service and must possess strong communication skills to communicate with patients, family members, hospital staff, and other faculty members within the Institution. As the Department of Hospital Medicine is a service that operates 24/7/365, nocturnal shifts will also be supported by the hospitalist physician. The Assistant Professor, CFA, will provide clinical expertise in patient care management and provide an appropriate teaching environment for fellows, residents, and students in the specialty of Onco-Hospitalist Medicine. The Assistant Professor, CFA, must be fully ambulatory and have excellent bilateral manual dexterity, good hand-eye coordination, and visual and auditory acuity to perform the job functions. The Assistant Professor, CFA, will be intelligent with outstanding analytical skills to make judgments regarding the patient’s medical problems and advise the patient on methods to improve their care. Furthermore, the Assistant Professor, CFA, must have emotional and psychological stability so that he/she will be able to manage patients and their families in a compassionate and positive manner. The Assistant Professor, CFA, will participate in the development of clinical research studies and will be independently responsible for new patient evaluations, initiation of appropriate referrals, and follow-up as appropriate. Clinical procedures practiced will encompass those pertinent in delivering standard care to the patient. Clinical Shows evidence of excellence in clinical care & performance. Shows evidence of ability to develop an essential role in patient care services. Represents the Department of Hospital Medicine in local, regional, state, and national matters pertaining to the field of Onco-Hospitalist Medicine. Will require traveling to sites outside of the Houston area and, upon return, disseminating the information obtained or learned by sharing with department colleagues verbally or in writing. Practices clinical medicine in an exemplary manner in standards set forth by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners, and the American College of Physicians, properly balanced with other academic activities. Must be capable of providing complete and thorough history and physical patient examinations. Must be able to perform invasive procedures as dictated by the physician's specialty. This may require standing, bending, stooping, lifting, hearing, manual dexterity, and clear and concise verbal communications. Develops and maintains a clinical practice for patients referred to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Provides physician staffing for the Department of Hospital Medicine at a level commensurate with that which would be provided by other internists with the same level of training and experience. Visually reviews for proper ICD-9 and CPT coding and approves all charge documents within 5 working days. Completes patient documentation for medical records within time frames provided by institutional policy. Will require dictating in a clear and concise manner, and visual review of documents. Corresponds as appropriate in writing or in telephone conversations with physicians regarding patient care and treatment. Keep abreast of current approaches in the management of patients through attendance at continuing education conferences in the specialty. This will require listening and assimilating information from the conferences. Requests appropriate consultations for patients by phone conversations or by writing to other physicians. Acts as a role model as a practitioner for faculty, fellows, residents, and students. Provides peer review for assessing the clinical practice of faculty within the Department. Must be able to work within a context of very intense interpersonal relationship including other physicians, patients, and subordinates. Administrative Demonstrates potential for institutional service. Shows promise for effective participation in teams as appropriate for appointment role(s). Complies with all policies and procedures. Serves on institutional and hospital committees as requested by attending appropriate meetings, which may include walking to each meeting site. Listens to deliberations and provides verbal feedback as necessary. Visually reviews all documents pertaining to committee functions. Research Shows promise of ability to participate in collaborative research and in team science. Actively engages in clinical research and scholarly activity to enhance the academic environment of the Department. Develops programs of clinical research and scholarly activities in keeping with the goals of the Department. Requires the ability to synthesize a myriad of information pertaining to the area of research. May necessitate (orally or in writing) instructing research support personnel in protocol implementation. Seeks appropriate funding mechanisms to support clinical research. May require completion of grant application forms through oral dictation or use of a computer and keyboard. Also, will require budget development and analysis. Education Has taken steps to initiate education activities including mentoring. REQUIREMENTS: This faculty position will be recruited as an open-rank position, with academic rank commensurate with the candidate's qualifications, experience, and academic accomplishments. Education: Doctorate-level degree in a field appropriate to faculty role and/or department mission. Appropriate post medical doctoral training per discipline. The Assistant Professor, CFA, must have completed the M.D. degree in an accredited medical school or equivalent, must have completed residency training in an approved American Residency Program or equivalent, have made application and been accepted by the American Board of Internal Medicine, and be licensed as a physician in the State of Texas. Must be board certified in Internal Medicine or obtain board certification within 3 years of employment. Licensure/Certification: Licensed to practice in Texas Board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine (or obtained within departmental timeline), unless exempted. Experience: At least 2 years experience as Instructor or 5 years post degree with any combination of time as a clinician, clinical scientist, or GME trainee (except specialties with shorter residencies or fellowships).
