Instructional Specialist, Ceramics

Paygrade 4. Part-time, up to 19 hours per week. This position will work between Monday and Saturday, flexible hours within the demand for lab traffic FLSA Hourly/Non-Exempt

SUMMARY

The Instructional Specialist supports the ceramics and art programs with set-up and equipment maintenance and enhances student success through one-on-one interactions

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Performs preparatory work for ceramics including efficiently mixes clay and glazes to ensure that students have immediate access to high-quality, reliable materials. Assists faculty in the preparation and maintenance of ceramics area. Safely and skillfully loads kilns to ensure student projects are fired correctly and consistently. Assists students troubleshoot equipment issues; repairs broken equipment by troubleshooting and maintaining wheels, pug mills, and kilns to prevent disruptive classroom downtime. Rigorous cleaning and organization; mitigates health hazards inherent to ceramic arts (such as silica dust exposure). Maintains records, prepares reports and data as requested Identifies and develops assistance for students to overcome barriers to success and monitors student progress. Updates inventory of all equipment as well as disposable items and prepares necessary requisition documents; maintains an organized area. May assist students in the study lab on Saturdays. Fosters a professional, welcoming environment that aligns with FVCC’s commitment to campus wellness and excellence. Remains current in practices, trends and research related to areas of assignment Attends related trainings, workshops, and professional development Cross trains to perform other departmental and team functions; backfills for staff as needed Actively participates in the development of a climate that promotes and supports innovation and efforts to continuously improve services to students, faculty, and the College Creates and maintains a collaborative and collegial environment with colleagues and maintains effective working relationships Maintains professional ethics and confidentiality of students in accordance with applicable laws and policies Advances the mission of FVCC by serving on or convening committees and contributing in the community in college-related activities Performs other duties as assigned Reports to Art Department Chair

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Associate’s degree and two years of experience in glaze mixing, kiln firing; OR, An equivalent combination of higher education and with experience in glaze mixing and kiln firing.

Medium Duty involves exertion of 20-50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10-25 pounds frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds continuously to move objects.
