Position Title Assistant Professor of Foundational Sciences Position Control Number 999596 Type of Position Faculty Position Status Campus Western University Campus-Pomona, CA Position Location Department 1701-College of Veterinary Medicine Job Summary The position plays a critical role in the training of veterinary students by contributing to Foundational Sciences education, including lectures, laboratories, problem‑based learning facilitation, and discussions on veterinary issues. The role also involves pursuing scholarly endeavors, such as developing a self‑sustaining research program, mentoring veterinary students, and participating in post‑DVM training initiatives. Additionally, the position requires active participation in college and university committees, as well as representing the institution to external agencies and funding bodies. If applicable, maintaining a California veterinary license and any relevant specialty certifications is also expected. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Individuals must possess this knowledge, these skills, and abilities, or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities. Ability to orally communicate with others. Ability to effectively interact with administration, faculty, staff, students, and outside contacts. Ability to handle detail‑oriented assignments and maintain confidentiality. Organizational skills necessary in prioritizing workload and delegating responsibility. Knowledge of educational needs for contemporary veterinary practice. Knowledge and skills in his/her discipline. Demonstrate a commitment to working in an organization that values and promotes humanism. Required Qualifications Education: An advanced degree (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (ie, DVM, VMD), PhD, or equivalent degree) in the discipline of expertise is required. Licensure: Actively licensed or eligible to be licensed as a Veterinarian in the state of California. Experience: The college is seeking an optimal match between individual qualifications and assessed ability to contribute to the College’s mission. All qualified candidates will be considered. Preferred Qualifications Key Responsibilities Contribute to the training of veterinary students in Foundational and Clinical Sciences. Participate in the curricular activities for Year 1 and 2 students, including but not limited to content expertise in the various disciplines, facilitation of Problem‑Based Learning (PBL) activities, foundational science lectures & laboratories, clinical science lectures & laboratories, skills development, veterinary issues discussions and presentations, and other ancillary activities as determined in the curriculum development process. Provide leadership and/or instruction for Year 3 and 4 courses and activities, including but not limited to Core and Selective Rotations supervision and oversight. Pursue scholarly endeavors and professional self‑development, with opportunities to engage in research, as negotiated. Develop a self‑sustaining research program. Participate in the development of post‑DVM training programs. Participate in the research mentoring of veterinary students. Participate in local, national, and/or international continuing education programs. Participate in college and university committees. Represent the college to external persons and agencies, including funding agencies. Maintenance of the California veterinary license (and any specialty board certification) and associated continuing education to keep license to practice veterinary medicine in the state of California (if applicable). Duties of the Faculty Member are normally performed in a typical office setting, classroom setting, or laboratory setting. Depending on individual professional specialty, curriculum duties may require different environmental settings which may include, but is not limited to classrooms, farms, clinical practices, research and academic laboratories, and other off campus settings. Occasionally the employee is exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in these settings is usually moderate due to telephone calls, office equipment, normal student traffic, and depending on species – animal noises. Some travel is required, and work environment characteristics will change to that of the regional norms. Virtual delivery of the curriculum might be considered based on the characteristics of the needs of the curriculum for this discipline.
