BJC’s patients have access to the latest advances in medical science and technology through a formal affiliation between Barnes‑Jewish Hospital and St. Louis Children’s Hospital with the Washington University School of Medicine. Preferred Qualifications Additional Preferred Requirements: Monday‑Friday, 830‑5 PM; No weekends or holidays. Role Purpose The Patient Access Representative is often the first point of contact for our patients and therefore must represent BJC with the highest standard of customer service, compassion and perform all duties in a manner consistent with our mission, vision, values and BJC service standards. The representative will facilitate all components of the patient’s entrance into any BJC facility. This position requires a high level of emotional intelligence, professionalism and the ability to make a personal connection. The role impacts reimbursement and denial prevention by accurate collection of demographics and insurance information, benefit verification and point‑of‑service collection. Selecting the correct patient from the Master Patient Index (MPI) is critical to patient safety. The team member must possess a friendly demeanor, exceptional attention to detail and maintain knowledge and competence with insurance carriers, Medicare guidelines and federal, state, and accreditation agencies. Responsibilities Utilize critical thinking skills to problem solve a variety of situations, anticipate patients' needs and respond accordingly. Communicate in a professional, positive, patient‑focused manner with all patients, families, and co‑workers in‑person, over the computer or by phone. This ensures positive patient experience, maximizes reimbursements, minimizes denials and avoids write‑offs, and maintains the integrity of the patient’s clinical, financial, and billing record by correctly selecting the precise MPI. Perform hospital registration and scheduling within multiple BJC systems. Verify patient identification, register, schedule, verify insurance, scan and retrieve documents. Validate that the order is complete, signed by the ordering provider, and that the correct test is ordered. Provide patient preparation instructions, education on financial responsibilities, and collect applicable patient payments. Comply with complex regulatory guidelines, understand, articulate and enforce hospital compliance with Medicare Secondary Payer (MSP), HIPAA Privacy Standards, Patient Bill of Rights and Responsibilities, Advance Directives, Consent to Treat, EMTALA, JCAHO requirements. Each patient completes HIPAA acknowledgement. Maintain a state of alertness and safe behavior as required for a safety‑sensitive position.
