Entry Level Advanced Police Officer

BACkground for the Entry Level-Advanced Police Officer: Candidates are either attending the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission’s (WSCJTC) Basic Law Enforcement Academy (BLEA) or have completed BLEA but have not completed a field training program with a city, county, state, or federal law enforcement agency. Salary will be determined by experience. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Provide service to the public relating directly to public safety including assistance, answering questions, making referrals, and solving community problems. Respond to calls for service and act appropriately with the needs of the caller in mind, following established policy, procedures, and current professional practices. Respond to emergency calls for service (accidents, medical emergencies, crimes in progress) and take appropriate initial action. Manage ongoing cases through thorough documentation and follow‑up investigations, complete case reporting, and networking with other officers, supervisors, and divisions. Interview victims, witnesses, and suspects and document statements regarding criminal and civil matters. Enforce City ordinances, State RCWs, Federal laws and court decisions. Apprehend offenders, including making physical arrests and overcoming resistance. Develop a detailed knowledge of the community (people, businesses, geography, problem areas). Exercise authority while enforcing laws in a manner consistent with the oath of office. Patrol the city using preventive and directed patrol to detect and prevent crime, enforce traffic laws, and identify hazards. Physically engage and restrain combative individuals. Present programs on crime prevention, traffic and boating safety, and drug awareness, including public speaking, meetings, and written materials. Use computers to create accurate, thorough, and complete cases, reports, logs, and other documentation for prosecutors or authorities. Assist other city departments, public safety agencies, and government agencies. Carry and use various firearms and less‑lethal launchers; shoot assigned weapons with accuracy per state standards. Operate assigned vehicle safely (car, motorcycle, bicycle, boat, etc.). Organizational‑Specific Duties and Expectations Endorse, support, and defend organizational objectives while complying with procedures and values. Create a positive team environment through courtesy, respect, support, and cooperation. Assist other Police Department work units, city departments, and outside agencies professionally and respectfully. Demonstrate initiative consistent with job expectations to improve personal and organizational performance. Avoid destructive organizational behavior toward the agency and its employees. Physical Demands and Work Environment Physical requirements and working conditions represent those encountered while performing essential functions. Workdays and hours generally scheduled, but shift work, extensions, and callouts may occur. Qualifications for Entry Level Education High School Diploma or equivalent (e.g., GED). Minimum 45 quarter or 30 semester college credits toward a relevant degree (preferred). Experience No prior law enforcement experience required. Qualifications for Entry Level‑Advanced Education High School Diploma or equivalent (e.g., GED). Minimum 45 quarter or 30 semester college credits toward a relevant degree (preferred). Experience Currently attending WSCJTC’s BLEA; or Graduate of BLEA but has not completed the FTO of a city, county, state, or federal agency. Qualifications for Lateral Candidates Education High School Diploma or equivalent (e.g., GED). Minimum 45 quarter or 30 semester college credits toward a relevant degree (preferred). Experience Currently employed or employed within last 24 months as a full‑time civilian law enforcement officer with a city, county, state, or federal agency; and Completed BLEA; and Completed FTO. Or prior training and experience qualify the candidate to attend an equivalency academy within six months of hire. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, regulations, policies, and procedures. Knowledge of structure, organization, and interrelationships of city departments and agencies. Skilled in personal computers and typical office equipment. Ability to operate specialized computer systems supporting law enforcement. Regular, predictable, and reliable attendance during scheduled hours. Contributor to a service‑oriented team. Typing speed of 35 words per minute preferred. Effective verbal and written communication, including conflict management. Ability to handle individuals under stress, emotional or mental disorders, or impaired by drugs. Positive interaction with diverse social and economic backgrounds. Sound judgment under stress. Deducive reasoning to solve problems. Follow complex oral and written instructions. Interpersonal skills with tact, patience, and courtesy. Interpret and apply laws, regulations, and procedures. Qualified to possess and use firearms with required proficiency. Operate vehicles and equipment safely in routine and emergency situations. Manage uncooperative or violent individuals without force when possible. Apply approved physical control for self‑defense, ensuring safety of others and making arrests. Analyze situations quickly and objectively, recognize threats, and determine proper course of action. Communicate with hostile, emotional, or unstable persons and use discretionary judgment in emergencies. Read, write, and speak English proficiently. Provide excellent customer service in stressful situations to internal and external customers. Meet all requirements established by the City for peace officers. Perform routine clerical tasks. Maintain confidentiality of business records and other information. Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements United States citizen. At least 20½ years old at time of application. Valid Washington State driver’s license with acceptable driving record. Successful background check, polygraph, psychological, medical, and drug screening. Successful completion of WSCJTC’s Basic Law Enforcement Academy (or equivalency academy within six months of hire) and field training programs and probation as conditions of employment.
