Mechanical Design Engineer

Sterling Engineering

Mechanical Design Engineer | Custom Automation & Special Machines If you enjoy designing machines that solve complex manufacturing challenges, not just modifying existing products, this opportunity offers the chance to work on highly customized automation systems from concept through commissioning. You'll collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to develop equipment used by leading manufacturers in industries such as life sciences, consumer products, food & beverage, transportation, and industrial manufacturing. This is a hands‑on engineering role where you'll own mechanical designs, influence project outcomes, and see your ideas become fully functioning automated equipment. What You'll Do Design custom automation equipment, including cam‑driven, servo‑driven, and pneumatic mechanisms from concept through release to manufacturing. Develop precision motion systems with a focus on performance, reliability, manufacturability, and cost. Create detailed 3D models, assembly drawings, part drawings, bills of materials, pneumatic schematics, and timing diagrams. Partner with controls engineers, manufacturing, suppliers, and customers throughout the design and build process. Participate in design reviews, prototype evaluations, machine troubleshooting, and continuous design improvements. Select mechanical components including sensors, actuators, bearings, drives, and pneumatic devices. Support machine startup, validation, and engineering changes as projects move through assembly and customer acceptance. Help improve engineering standards while mentoring junior designers and sharing technical best practices. What We're Looking For Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or equivalent practical experience. Minimum of 2 years of mechanical design experience in custom automation, special machinery, packaging equipment, assembly systems, or industrial machinery. Proficiency with SOLIDWORKS, AutoCAD, or similar 3D CAD software. Experience designing servo-driven, cam‑driven, and pneumatic mechanisms. Ability to interpret engineering drawings and work comfortably in both office and manufacturing environments. Strong problem‑solving skills with a collaborative approach to engineering. Why Engineers Are Interested Design custom machines, not repetitive product updates. See your designs progress from concept to a fully operational machine on the shop floor. Work on technically challenging projects across a wide range of manufacturing industries. Collaborate with experienced mechanical, controls, electrical, and manufacturing engineers in a highly team‑oriented environment. Exposure to advanced automation technologies, robotics, motion control, and precision manufacturing. Opportunities to grow technically while taking on increasing project ownership and customer interaction. Stable organization with a long history of engineering complex automation solutions for globally recognized manufacturers. This role is ideal for a mechanical engineer who enjoys solving unique engineering problems, working in a fast‑paced project environment, and creating automation equipment that has a direct impact on how products are manufactured. #J-18808-Ljbffr Sterling Engineering
