Orientation and Mobility Specialist (Part-Time) Job Description Job Title: Orientation and Mobility Specialist (Part-Time) Wage/Hour Status: Exempt Reports to: Director of Special Education Pay Grade: Teacher Dept./School: Special Education Date Revised: April 2026 Primary Purpose: Assess, plan, and provide orientation and mobility services for students requiring direct and consultative Orientation and Mobility services in relation to their visual impairments. Location: Grapevine-Colleyville ISD Special Services – Grapevine, Texas Qualifications Education/Certification: Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree. Valid Texas teaching certificate or such other credentials as may be required by the State Board of Educator Certification for this position. Certified Teacher of the Visually Impaired preferred. Certification in Orientation and Mobility – Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP). Special/Knowledge Skills: Knowledge of formal orientation skills and mobility skills. Knowledge of Extended Core Curriculum. Knowledge of Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired programming and services. Current knowledge of technology supports for individuals with visual impairment. Licensed to drive school bus with passengers (or willing and able to secure appropriate license). Major Responsibilities and Duties Instructional and Program Management Complete Orientation and Mobility evaluations, prepare written reports of evaluation data and address goals and objectives based on students’ needs. Provide appropriate Orientation and Mobility lessons consistent with the goals contained in Individual Education Plans (IEP). Evaluate student progress and make determination regarding appropriate services for educational needs. Participate in the Admission, Review and Dismissal (ARD) Committee and IFSP meetings to assist with the interpretation of assessment data, appropriate placement, and goal setting for students according to district procedures. Provision of Services Provide appropriate Orientation and Mobility services for all students with services determined by their IEP. Plan and implement an instructional plan for students who qualify for Orientation and Mobility services. Assist with IEP development and recommend appropriate modifications and accommodations. Consult with colleagues, students, and parents regarding the accomplishment of orientation and mobility goals, the needs of the student, and involvement in the remedial process. Collaborate with classroom teachers to plan and implement classroom activities, strategies, and adaptive equipment/materials to support student learning. Provide professional development in assigned schools to help school personnel identify and work more effectively with students with orientation and mobility services. Student Management Prepare sequential and meaningful learning that is appropriate for the maturity level and interests of students. Promote safe independent travel and orientation with proficiency, safety, and age appropriateness in familiar and unfamiliar environments. Establish an environment conducive to learning and follow district discipline procedures according to the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook. Program Management Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of Orientation and Mobility services and implement changes based on the findings. Participate in the selection of necessary equipment and instructional materials. Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other required documents. Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, State Board of Education rule, and board policy. Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations. Supervisory Responsibilities May supervise interns in O&M and/or VI as required by a University Program and approved by the district. Working Conditions Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Tools/Equipment Used: Standard testing equipment; standard office equipment including computer and peripherals; specialized equipment for orientation and mobility including but not limited to: canes, monoculars, etc. Physical Demands: Frequent sitting, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting; Frequent walking, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension; Regular light lifting and carrying (under 15 pounds), occasional heavy lifting (45 pounds or more) and positioning of students with physical disabilities; controlling behavior through physical restraint; assisting non-ambulatory students. Environment: Exposure to biological hazards, bacteria, and communicable diseases; districtwide travel; community travel; may share office space; may require summer hours. Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under pressure, flexible to respond to student needs, adapt to changes, develop solutions to problems, respond to short timelines. #J-18808-Ljbffr
