Product Designer

About AAPC
AAPC ( is the world’s largest and fastest-growing healthcare training, certification, and solutions association, serving more than 300,000 members across medical coding and revenue cycle management. Our digital products are the primary way members learn, grow, and advance their careers — and we’re investing heavily in making those experiences world-class.Position Summary
We’re hiring a product designer who builds. Not someone who finishes a Figma file and waits for a sprint slot. Someone who takes a fuzzy idea on Monday, works in our codebase with AI assistance, and has a real, clickable, data-fed prototype in front of members by Thursday.
This role exists because the distance between “designed” and “working” has collapsed. Designers who build with AI assistance are now operating at a different speed and fidelity than the traditional handoff process allows, and we want to hire into that reality rather than around it.
To be clear about what this is not : this is not a visual design role, and it is not a brand role. Our design system is mature and actively maintained. Your job is to work within it and extend it with a rationale rather than redesign it — and to spend the time you save on the part that actually matters, which is figuring out what we should build and whether it works for the person using it.
You need genuine UX chops: research instincts, flow-level thinking, an opinion about information architecture, the discipline to test rather than assume. And you need to be comfortable with an AI-assisted codebase. Most people have one or the other. We’re looking for both.
What the Job Actually Looks Like
- Turn ambiguity into working software. Take an early-stage concept and produce a functioning prototype — real components, real states, real data where possible — fast enough that stakeholders react to the thing itself instead of to a description of it.
- Build in our codebase. You’ll work with our existing component library and design system using AI-assisted development (Claude Code, Cursor, or your tool of choice). Prototypes live in a sandbox or a branch, never in production. You don’t need to write production-grade code. You do need to ship prototypes engineering can read, react to, and often lift from directly.
- Hold the line on the design system. Use what exists. Extend it deliberately when a genuine gap appears, with reasoning attached. Every one-off you avoid is speed you bank for the whole team.
- Own UX end to end. Discovery, flows, IA, interaction design, launch, and the iteration after launch — including the unglamorous part where you go find out what actually happened.
- Test what you build. Design and run usability studies and A/B tests. Bring evidence to conversations that would otherwise be settled by whoever is most confident in the room.
- Design for a real and demanding audience. Our members are working professionals under time pressure, learning material with genuine consequences attached. Clever loses to clear here, every time.
- Use Figma when Figma is the right tool. For system contributions, alignment artifacts, and detailed handoff, Figma is still where the work lives. You should be strong in it. It just isn’t your default anymore.
- Partner across the org. Product, marketing, and engineering. You’ll present your thinking to people who don’t design for a living, and you’ll do it in language that lands.
What We’re Looking For
Required
- 4+ years of professional UX or product design experience. What you’ve shipped and how you think matters much more than the number — but you should have owned real problems end to end, not just executed someone else’s direction.
- You already build with AI as part of how you work. Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, Claude Code, Figma Make, v0 — the specific tools matter less than the fluency. You should be able to describe what you shipped this way, what it cost you, and where it fell apart. This is a hard requirement, not a bonus point.
- Working fluency in a codebase. You can read a component, wire up a screen, understand a design system expressed as code, and work in a branch without breaking things. Read-level fluency is the bar; our specific stack is teachable.
- Demonstrated UX substance. Research, flows, IA, user journeys, usability testing, and the judgment to know which problem is worth solving.
- Strong written and verbal communication. You can make the case for a decision to an audience that will push back, and take the note when the note is right.
- Strong Figma skills. Not your primary surface anymore, but you should be fluent.
- Real intellectual curiosity. You ask the question nobody else asked, and you go find the answer without being assigned to.
- Hands-on experience with A/B testing and data-informed iteration. You’ve shipped a test, read the result honestly, and changed your mind at least once because of it. If you’ve done these two or three times rather than two or three hundred, apply anyway.
This Probably Isn’t For You If…
We’d rather be direct up front than waste your time in a process.- Your portfolio is mostly visual explorations, brand systems, marketing pages, or beautifully art-directed case study decks with thin evidence of user problems being solved.
- Figma is where your work begins and ends, and the idea of opening a repo is a hard no.
- You want to redesign a design system in your first quarter. Extending ours is welcome; replacing it isn’t the assignment.
- You need a fully groomed ticket with acceptance criteria before you can start. Much of this job is deciding what the ticket should have said.
- You’ve tried AI tools a couple of times and figure you’d pick it up. The bar here is that you already work this way.
- You’re looking for a role where design hands off and engineering takes it from there.
Nice to Have
- Experience with VWO or a comparable A/B testing platform
- Familiarity with Jira and agile product development
- Design system contribution experience, especially where design tokens and code stayed in sync
- Front-end fundamentals — React, Tailwind, or similar — beyond what AI assistance gives you
- Range across multiple industries or product categories
- Exposure to healthcare, education and e-learning, professional associations, or membership organizations
