PT Library Assistant -Circ & Info Departments - West Deptford Free Public Library POSITION: PART- TIME LIBRARY ASSISTANT- CIRCULATION AND INFORMATION

DEFINITION

Performs responsible clerical and paraprofessional circulation or other support duties under the supervision of the Library Manager and Library Director.

HOURS

Mon & Wed 4pm‑8pm, every other Sat 10‑3pm (21 hrs / pay period, biweekly pay) with additional hours possible as needed. PAY $16.50/hr

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS FOR THE CIRCULATION DESK

Charges and discharges library materials, collects fines, register new patrons and issues library cards. Assists the public in the use of library resources and equipment. Answers questions on library organization, holdings, policies and procedures. Checks and maintains shelves to ensure correct order. Accepts reserves for library materials and notifies patrons when items are available. Opens building at the start of the business day and closes the building at the end of the day. Handles overdue notices in accordance with library policy. Collects data for statistical reports. Performs other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS FOR THE INFORMATION DESK

Answers reference questions asked in‑person, virtually, or by telephone. Assists patrons in the use of electronic reference products and the online catalog (OPAC). Answers patron inquiries pertaining to physical locations of library materials. Assists patrons with the use of public computers and printers. Assists patrons in placing requests through interlibrary loan. Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Ability to plan, coordinate and direct work. Ability to create a pleasant, helpful atmosphere. Ability to relate tactfully and courteously with the public and to maintain effective working relationships with other employees. Ability to exercise initiatives, to stimulate interest and encourage participation in reading and other library activities. Knowledge of current events, popular, local and popular culture. Strong organizational and communication skills.

LIBRARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES

Thorough knowledge of library and clerical terminology, library procedures use of computers and other equipment. Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the general public and to maintain effective working relationships with other library staff. Ability to maintain established library records and files. Knowledge of books and background in literature helpful. Strong organizational ability. Ability to comprehend, analyze and interpret regulations, policies and procedures of the library.

QUALIFICATIONS

High School graduate or equivalent. Previous library experience or some college or library courses preferred. Familiarity with computers.
