Instrumentation Engineering Technician - OCU - Technical - 3x12AM Columbus, IN, United States Be the First to Apply Job Description Job Summary: Conducts performance and reliability testing on engines, components, systems, and controls. Key Responsibilities: Conduct performance and reliability testing on multiple and single cylinder engines, components, systems, and controls; diagnose engines, components, systems, controls, and test cell problems and initiate appropriate resolutions. Configure and operate data acquisition systems; analyze and review data for appropriateness; write computer programs to assist in analysis and data interpretation; configure engine test programs; interpret results; make necessary adjustments; document, define data collected, and maintain electronic files. Perform rig, engine, and component builds, tear down, and inspections. Grade and measure components. Create sketches for machining and fabricate necessary piping, tubing, and brackets from prints and drawings. Install engines and instrumentation of engines and components in test cells and test rigs. Use common tools such as Calterm, Asset, Cyflex, etc. Design, document, and execute test plans; provide input during the creation of test plans; prepare test reports to include findings, conclusions, and recommendations. Understand and apply appropriate company and department rules and guidelines to work. Work with and train apprentices and technicians. Interface with customers, suppliers, engineers, and other functions. Coordinate programs including planning, scheduling, ordering, and tracking. Participate in the maintenance of quality procedures. Lead and participate in improvement projects. Develop and give presentations to customers and suppliers. Know and comply with all safety policies and procedures. Demonstrate confidentiality as required. Participate in self‑ and team‑audits and associated corrective action. Perform other miscellaneous duties, as required, to get the job done. External Qualifications and Competencies Competencies: Data Acquisition – Prepare samples, verify equipment calibration and perform tests according to an approved standard procedure or work instruction to ensure trusted data delivered to the engineer or customer. Data Reporting – Prepare documentation that clearly organizes and presents testing methods, instrument settings, data, and analysis to allow the engineer and customer to understand results and form accurate conclusions and recommendations. Product Function Test System Design – Interpret test equipment specifications, select and integrate appropriate equipment, instrumentation and software to control boundary conditions and collect measurement data; assess capability of lab equipment against requirements and support infrastructure. Test Article Build – Assemble test articles according to test requirements, including installation or accommodations for instrumentation, allowing successful product functional testing. Test Setup and Configuration – Interpret test plans to determine optimal location and orientation within a test space in accordance with local safety and environmental requirements; fabricate required system with appropriate materials. Action oriented – Take on new opportunities and tough challenges with urgency, high energy, and enthusiasm. Communicates effectively – Deliver multi‑mode communications that convey a clear understanding of the unique needs of different audiences. Preventative and Predictive Maintenance – Interpret machine and tool maintenance records and data to develop and execute preventative and predictive management strategies for continuous improvement. Problem Solving – Solve problems, mentor others by using systematic analysis process, leveraging industry standard methodologies to create problem traceability and protect the customer; determine assignable causes, implement robust, data‑based solutions and ensure actions to prevent problem recurrence are implemented. Education, Licenses, Certifications: High school diploma, GED or equivalent required with Department of Labor Certification OR Associates degree from an accredited program in a related field and at least two years of relevant experience OR Bachelors degree in a related field. Experience: Department of Labor Certification OR four year experience/education requirement accomplished through either Bachelors degree in related field OR associates degree in related field and at least two years of relevant experience. Additional Responsibilities Unique to this Position Core Responsibilities / Activities First‑Line Instrumentation Support for Test Cells – Respond promptly to emissions test cell instrumentation issues, perform initial troubleshooting, basic diagnostics, and corrective actions following established procedures, escalating to senior technicians, engineers, or supervisors when necessary. Issue Logging and Work Documentation – Record all support activities using the department’s PowerApps tracking tool, including problem descriptions, troubleshooting steps, time spent, and parts replaced; maintain clear, accurate notes for shift handovers, trend analysis, and continuous improvement. Learning and Performing Required Calibrations – Gain proficiency over time in performing required regulatory and internal verifications and calibrations (e.g., 35‑day, 6‑month, and annual checks); support calibration activities across ISO17025‑accredited CVS systems and additional test cells. Skill, Education, or Experience Requirements High school diploma, GED, or equivalent with Department of Labor Certification, OR Associate’s degree with at least two years of relevant experience, OR Bachelor’s degree in a related field, OR relevant military education and experience. Basic mechanical, electrical, or instrumentation troubleshooting skills, with willingness to learn emissions measurement systems. Ability to follow written procedures, document work accurately, and use digital tools for tracking tasks and issues. Strong sense of urgency, teamwork, and comfort working in a fast‑paced test‑cell environment. Skill, Education, or Experience Preferences Previous hands‑on experience in a laboratory, manufacturing, maintenance, or test environment.
