To learn more about UC Irvine, visit Your Role on the Team The position of Nurse Practitioner PD in the Department of Surgery requires a highly competent, independent yet team‑oriented individual who will be immersed in the management and coordination of all inpatient care of surgical patients, primarily located at a new hospital in Irvine, California. The surgical patients will include general surgery and specialty surgical services on all levels of care, including the intensive care unit. Inpatient surgical services include colorectal surgery, ENT, general surgery, gynecology, hand surgery, minimally invasive surgery, plastic surgery, surgical oncology, thoracic, urology and vascular. Duties include consults and inpatient care and management. The nurse practitioner will participate in inpatient sign‑out/hand‑off at the beginning and end of shift, round and communicate with the surgery teams, residents and attending physicians, and be responsible for surgical consultations on potential surgical patients. The nurse practitioner will be involved in resuscitations of surgical patients from the ED and ICU, coordinate procedures (including scheduling operations and other procedures), perform admit and discharge documentation, triage phone calls, review critical labs, follow up results with patients and medical staff, obtain comprehensive medical histories, perform initial and daily physical examinations/assessments, and explore patients’ health needs in a trauma‑informed manner. The nurse practitioner will identify, treat, and manage hospitalized patients and demonstrate an advanced level of medical knowledge, clinical/technical competence, sound clinical judgment, professional communication skills, timely and compliant documentation, and be responsible for professional development and competency validation. The nurse practitioner will participate in the comprehensive care of patients in the inpatient settings and provide multidisciplinary care coordination, treatment, education, monitoring and communication with patients and referring physicians. In addition, Nurse Practitioners with RNFA credentials may assist in the operating room, collaborating closely with surgeons and the surgical team to ensure high‑quality patient care throughout surgical procedures. This Nurse Practitioner position is represented by the California Nurses Association (CNA) union. Required Two years of experience as Nurse Practitioner to support setting and patient population. Ability to obtain UCIMC Allied Health Professional Privileges prior to hire. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the program and UCI Health System. Ability to exercise diplomacy and flexibility in interacting with physicians, nurses, other paramedical personnel, administrators, emergency and law enforcement officers. Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job. Skill to clearly communicate medical information to a broad variety of people, both in person and over the telephone. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Writing skills to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data and progress notes; ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload. Must possess the skill, knowledge and ability essential to the successful performance of assigned duties. Ability to be trained in the use of specialized medical equipment and procedures. Demonstrates an understanding of and adheres to privacy, confidentiality, and security policies and procedures related to Protected Health Information (PHI) or other sensitive and personal information. Current, active, unrestricted California Registered Nurse license. Current, active, unrestricted California Nurse Practitioner license. Current, active, unrestricted prescribing license and DEA registration; active National Provider Identifier (NPI). NP National Board Certification (Beginning February 2018): Adult Gerontology Acute Care AGACNP-BC or ACNPC-AG. Current BLS and ACLS certification. At least 2 years of Nurse Practitioner clinical experience. Preferred Knowledge of Windows and MS Office software applications (Excel, Word, Quest, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook). Experience in Trauma/Critical Care nursing. Experience in Surgical Critical Care as NP. Familiarity with UC policies and procedures. Bi‑lingual in Spanish and/or Vietnamese.
