Medical Technician

Duties

Perform a wide variety of difficult and complex laboratory tests and examinations in the chemistry, serology, hematology, urinalysis, immunohematology, and microbiology sections of a laboratory.

Select appropriate test methodology to use and recognize when test values are positive or exceed a defined decision limit, based on the results that determine the need for additional testing.

Provide training for laboratory personnel.

Ensure proper collection and processing of specimens for reference laboratory testing.

Perform fluorescent antibody tests such as the fluorescent treponemal antibody absorption test, a serologic test for syphilis, and the fluorescent antibody test for lupus erythematosus.

Ensure detected testing errors are resolved and specimens are retested before results are reported.

Maintain appropriate quality control data specific for individual tests performed.

Input data and results in hospital-wide computer system making corrections as required for proper diagnosis and treatment of the patient.
