Senior Scientist / Principal Scientist, Complex in Vitro Systems

The Complex in Vitro Systems (CiS) Lab in the Department of Translational Safety is seeking a Senior Scientist / Principal Scientist to develop, characterize, and qualify advanced complex in vitro models to support Genentech's mission of delivering safe and efficacious medicines. This lab-based role focuses on human iPSC-derived ocular complex in vitro models (CIVM) including retinal organoids for drug development. Responsibilities Culture and characterize state-of-the-art ocular CIVM models. Design and execute model qualification and characterization studies (advanced imaging, transcriptomics, functional and phenotypic assays). Analyze and interpret complex datasets. Maintain rigorous, high-quality documentation. Share scientific insights across functional teams and contribute to cross-disciplinary collaborations. Support internal and external publication efforts. Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams within and outside gRED to align ocular model building with therapeutic strategies and program needs. Analyze, interpret, and communicate study results to collaborators and stakeholders. Contribute to study reports, safety assessments, and final deliverables. Qualifications PhD in biology, bioengineering, biomedical engineering, pharmacology, or related field. 0-4 years post-PhD experience for Senior Scientist or 5 or more years for Principal Scientist in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, academia, or research organizations. Strong focus on complex in vitro ocular systems. Expertise developing, qualifying, and applying 3D ocular tissue models, retinal organoids, co-culture systems, or microphysiological/microfluidic platforms. Proficiency in quantitative and qualitative characterization techniques such as qRT-PCR, scRNA-seq, proteomics, immunofluorescence, confocal microscopy, live-cell and time-lapse imaging, high-content imaging, and data analysis. Collaborative, team-oriented, with strong communication and organizational skills. Experience writing detailed SOPs and strong scientific rigor. Preferred Qualifications Experience with stem cell-based systems and ophthalmology background. Cell engineering, design of experiments (DOE) methodologies, computational data analysis and/or programming. Salary Senior Scientist: $120,700-$224,100 (based on Experience, Location).
