Job Description Summary
Under general supervision of the Shop Foreman or designee, the HVAC Services Technician performs skilled, craftsman-level work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), and refrigeration systems across hospital and university facilities. This role is responsible for diagnosing mechanical and electrical issues, responding to service calls, and ensuring all systems operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with regulatory standards. The technician plays a critical role in maintaining environmental control necessary for patient care and is designated as essential personnel during emergencies or disasters.
Ensures that E.P.A. and other regulatory agency guidelines are followed. EPA Universal Certification required. Ensures there are no unauthorized gas leaks or releases. The incumbent will, on a rotating basis, be on call for one week and work a weekend scheduled shift. Incumbent is Considered Essential Personnel in a disaster. 40 Work Shift Job Description The HVAC Services Technician performs installation, maintenance, and repair of HVAC and refrigeration systems, including chillers, air handling units (AHUs), drives, motors, pumps, and related equipment. The role involves responding to both routine and emergency service calls by troubleshooting and resolving mechanical and electrical issues to ensure system reliability. The technician monitors and maintains HVAC systems across owned or leased facilities to support safe operation, environmental control, and energy efficiency. Responsibilities also include conducting preventive maintenance inspections, performing scheduled servicing, and ensuring all systems comply with applicable building, fire, and regulatory codes. The incumbent installs new equipment and integrates systems with existing infrastructure while documenting all maintenance activities, inspections, and repairs. Additionally, the technician assesses facilities for potential safety risks, reports hazards to management, and participates in planned outages or team-based projects as needed. This role requires participation in an on-call rotation, including weekend shifts, and performing other duties as assigned to support departmental operations. Additional Job Description Education: High School Diploma or equivalent required; Minimum of three (3) years of experience; Technical training, certifications, or education related to HVAC, building systems, or mechanical trades preferred; Refrigerant and CFC certification preferred; Knowledge of Building Codes, National Fire Codes, and Joint Commission standards is a plus.
