Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical

Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated Registered Nurse to join our Medical Surgical unit for a 13-week contract position. In this role, you will provide comprehensive nursing care to a diverse patient population that includes post-operative orthopedic, neurological, and general surgical patients. You will work closely with a collaborative medical team to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct patient care in a 52-bed medical surgical unit.
• Manage a patient ratio of 1:6-7, primarily 1:7 on nights.
• Administer medications and monitor patient vitals.
• Collaborate with physicians and healthcare teams for patient assessments and care planning.
• Assist with the orientation and training of new staff as needed.
• Utilize electronic health record system (Allscripts) for documentation.
• Participate in ongoing education and competency assessments.

Schedule

This position requires 12-hour night shifts, with weekends as scheduled. The shifts are from 1845 to 0715. Staff are allowed to submit up to 6 requests off per 6-week schedule.

Required Experience / Certifications / Licensure

• Active Registered Nurse (RN) license.
• BLS (AHA) certification is required.
• NIHSS certification is required.
• ACLS certification is a PLUS.
• Experience in medical surgical nursing, preferably with orthopedic and post-operative care.

Patient Population
All ortho post-ops, all basic neuro post-ops (laminectomies, discectomies, spinal fusions), all other general post-ops (gallbladders, mastectomies, sleeve gastrectomy's, infections, other medical dx: COPD, CP, pneumonia, cellulitis, etc.
Hemodialysis is on this floor. It is HIGHLY preferred travelers have experience with peritoneal dialysis.

Unit Description
*52 beds; all private rooms
*Ratios 1:6-7 (Mostly 1:7 for both Day & Night shift)
*Charge Nurse/House Supervisor The Charge Nurse takes a full patient assignment. He has a Clinical Assistant (CA) 40 hours/week - 1/2 the time is on the floor taking patients & the other 1/2 in the office as the CA
Nurse Aides CNA's: Usually have 4-6 CNA's per shift. Ratios 1:10-12
