Assistant Director of Development, Wilmer Eye Institute

The Assistant Director of Development is an integral member of a Central team or Development Office (DOFF) and is responsible for securing philanthropic support for an assigned area of Johns Hopkins University and Medicine. Under the guidance of department/divisional leadership, the Assistant Director will organize and implement strategies for effective relationships with prospects and donors, interact with constituents at all stages in the development cycle, with a focus on the discovery and qualification of prospects to meet fundraising goals and objectives. The Assistant Director is incentive eligible if at least 50% of effort is spent on annual gift fundraising. Wilmer is a unique department with 10 clinics across Maryland and Northern VA and 300,000 outpatient visits per year (10% of all JHM outpatient visits) that generates over 15,000 surgeries annually. Wilmer has roughly 114 Clinical faculty and 49 Research faculty for whom the development team secures philanthropic funds. In addition, the team regularly organizes and manages many Institute-wide, clinic and division (9 sub‑specialty divisions) specific fundraising priorities, for which each gift officer plays a key role. The team brings in between 1,700 and 2,000 gifts annually. Due to the average age of our patient base, Wilmer also receives a very large number of memorial gifts which increases the time needed to properly steward the family and donors. Specific Duties & Responsibilities In collaboration with leadership, strategize to determine fundraising and development activities that result in the creation of an annual work plan with specific fundraising goals, KPIs, and objectives. Under general oversight, identify and qualify donors, make recommendations and contribute to the implementation of strategies to create effective donor relationships. Under established processes and procedures, identify and qualify new prospects. Manage overall engagement strategies for an assigned portfolio of donors and prospects. Create a strategy for ongoing communication and engagement for the portfolio. Leverage activity, including calls, visits, virtual engagement, and email to discover, cultivate, solicit and steward donors and prospects. Utilize the prospect management system in the CRM to conduct research and analysis as well as document development activities. Collaborate with development colleagues as well as faculty and staff in departments across the institution. Conduct a targeted number of strategic, in‑person or virtual visits per year to qualify new prospects, solicit gifts, educate or steward donors. Prepare gift proposals, solicitation letters, and other cultivation and presentation materials for prospects/donors. Evaluate the program and approach and recommend adjustments to leadership. Execute special projects and assignments that advance the fundraising efforts and the capacity of the teams. Other duties as assigned. Additional Responsibilities Manage Wilmer's Annual Fund, developing a comprehensive solicitation strategy inclusive of phone, mail, and digital outreach to solicit, upgrade, and steward annual donors and build a robust major gift pipeline. Analyze fundraising data and produce meaningful reports for the Executive Director and Director of Development to inform prospect strategy, faculty meetings, and donor engagement priorities, including monthly Prospect Strategy meetings. Partner with the Office of Medical Annual Giving (OMAG) to produce materials to solicit gifts from recent patients and to renew giving from previous donors. Serve as the primary point of contact for third‑party fundraising campaigns, responding to inquiries, providing technical assistance, and fostering relationships to maximize fundraising outcomes. Represent Wilmer at institutional forums including the Annual Giving Roundtable, Annual Giving Liaison group, and other Development and Alumni Relations committees. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree. Two years of related experience. Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula. Preferred Qualifications Experience working in a higher education and/or academic medical fundraising setting. Experience using a CRM. Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook). Experience using Salesforce or similar advancement CRM platforms for reporting, pipeline tracking, and donor strategy. Demonstrated interest in donor‑centered strategy, data‑informed decision‑making, and continuous process improvement. Experience working with alumni populations and volunteer engagement.
