Radiologic Technologist II

Overview This recruitment is being given to fill 1 part-time (per diem) position in the Office of Medical Examiner department and to establish an eligible referral pool to fill future part-time opportunities. Resumes will not be accepted in lieu of an application. A completed application must be postmarked or received online by the final filing deadline. Potential new hires into this classification are required to successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen and a background investigation as a condition of employment. Final appointment cannot be made unless the eligible has passed the drug screen and successfully completed the background process. The County pays for the initial drug screen. Typical Duties Prepares and positions patients for diagnostic x‑ray films; determines the correct exposure factors on the basis of height, weight, portion of body involved and degree of penetration required; selects appropriate cones and screens to reduce secondary radiation and fogging; sets machine control and exposes the required number and type of film. Assists Radiologist in fluoroscopic x‑ray examinations; assembles equipment; measures and mixes barium and contrast media; maintains surveillance over patients, performs radiographs as necessary for the radiographic procedure. May operate computerized tomography scanner; assists radiologist in performing special x‑ray examinations such as angiography, arthrography, myelography, and other special procedures. May prepare and position patients for sonographic imaging examinations; calibrates and adjusts equipment according to the area of body involved; takes appropriate films of each examination. Records patient information, patient identification numbers, and number and type of views taken in‑patient log; maintains records as required. Demonstrates all procedures to students; monitors students; performs procedures; corrects faulty techniques and explains appropriate methods. Develops exposed film using automatic processors. Minimum Qualifications Experience: Eighteen months performing radiographic work. Substitution: Graduation from the San Joaquin General Hospital School of Radiologic Technology may be substituted for six months of the required experience. Licenses and Certificates: Registration with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, and certification by the Department of Health, State of California, as a Radiologic Technologist. Note: Generally, persons who are registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists may obtain certification as a Radiologic Technologist in the state of California upon applications and payment of fees to the state Department of Health. Special Requirements: Possession of a State of California Certification in mammography or a State of California fluoroscopy permit may be required as a condition for assignment or continued assignment as a Radiologic Technologist II. Pre‑Employment Drug Screening and Background Checks: Required and must be completed before final appointment. Knowledge Methods and techniques of diagnostic radiography; various anatomical positions used in radiography; and care and use of radiographic equipment; safety practices to prevent overexposure to radiation. Ability Sit and/or stand for extended periods of time, manual dexterity sufficient to administer procedures and operate equipment; bend, stoop and lift patients; position patients for a variety of imaging examinations; understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions in exact detail; demonstrate the operation of x‑ray equipment in practical work situations; perform minor interventional x‑ray procedures; maintain records; establish and maintain effective relationships with medical staff, patients and patients families. Physical/Mental Requirements Mobility – frequent operation of a keyboard, standing for long periods of time, walking, pushing/pulling, and operation of heavy equipment; occasional sitting for long periods of time and stair climbing. Frequency of Lifting – constant lifting of 5 lbs. or less; frequent restraining, lifting/turning heavy objects or people; occasional lifting of 5 to above 70 lbs. Visual Requirements – constant need for overall vision, hand/eye coordination and reading/close up work; frequent need for color perception, depth perception and field of vision. Dexterity – constant holding, reaching and grasping; frequent writing. Hearing/Talking – constant hearing of normal speech and talking in person; frequent hearing on the telephone/radio and talking on the radio; occasional hearing of faint sounds. Emotional/Psychological Factors – constant public contact, decision making, concentration and working alone; frequent exposure to hazardous materials, trauma, grief and death; occasional weekend/night work and overtime/travel. Environmental Conditions – occasional exposure to hazardous materials.
