Pay Range The expected hiring range for this position is: $111,400.00–$146,600.00. The pay offered will be determined based on factors such as scope and responsibilities, qualifications, business considerations, internal equity, and external market pay. About the Role Fermilab is seeking a Senior Mechanical Thermal‑Fluids Engineer to lead the Thermal‑Fluids Engineering Group. The Group collaborates across the laboratory and with external partners to design, fabricate, test, install, and operate components and systems for particle accelerators. Technologies used include ANSYS, NASTRAN, Siemens NX, additive manufacturing, and advanced fabrication techniques. Day‑to‑Day Responsibilities Serve as the leader of the Thermal‑Fluids Engineering Group and as the Level4 Technical Manager for the LBNF RAW Water Systems. Apply fundamental mechanical engineering concepts to tasks ranging from design through procurement, fabrication, installation, testing, and operation. Lead mechanical design, analysis, specification, and construction of fluid cooling piping systems, including temperature control of beamline components such as magnets, collimators, RF cavities, instrumentation, high‑powered targets, kickers, and related systems. Lead efforts in general mechanical‑system design, thermal‑fluid system design, piping system fluid‑flow analysis, and heat‑transfer analysis. Provide operational engineering support by troubleshooting existing accelerator fluid systems and designing upgrades to improve reliability. Fabricate systems using welding, brazing, bonding, and soldering techniques with materials such as aluminum, stainless steel, copper, brass, PVC, CPVC, and PVDF. Direct the activities of drafters, designers, technicians, skilled trades, co‑op students, and interns. Communicate with vendors, contractors, and fabricators through written specifications and engineering drawings. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in an applicable engineering discipline from an ABET‑accredited institution with 8+ years of engineering experience, or a Master’s degree with 6+ years of experience. Strong ability to communicate expectations clearly with customers, stakeholders, and team members. Ability to work effectively under shifting schedules and priorities. Proficiency in fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, piping network calculations, and engineering mechanics (statics, stress, strain, deflection). Knowledge of machine‑shop practices, fabrication of complex hardware, and welding/brazing techniques (TIG, MIG, torch). Strong computing skills: engineering calculations, 3D modeling, 2D drafting, FEA analyses, data presentation, and project management (cost estimates, schedules). Experience with CAD software and piping-system design (AutoCAD Plant, AFT Fathom, AFT Arrow, ANSYS Workbench, Fluent, or CFX) is desirable. Ability to read and create mechanical drawings, piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID), and process piping flow schematics. Familiarity with ASME, AISC, and ANSI/ASME pressure vessel and piping codes is desirable. Basic knowledge of materials science, metallurgy, radiation damage, and electrical engineering concepts.
