The Float Pool RN provides competent, evidence-based nursing care across multiple care settings, offering variety and flexibility in every shift and rotate across multiple units which include:

• Emergency Department - 19-bed unit
• Four Med-Surg/Telemetry units - typically a 4:1 patient ratio
• Inpatient Mental Health
• DOM-SUD - 21-day outpatient alcohol and substance abuse rehab program
• ICUs - Float Pool RNs care for med-surg/tele overflow patients only if floated to ICU.

Assignments shift between units based on census, acuity, and staffing needs, with extended placements possible to support long-term staffing. Key responsibilities include:

• Providing direct and indirect patient care across multiple care settings
• Supervising LPNs and Nursing Assistants as appropriate
• Collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to optimize patient outcomes
• Supporting quality improvement initiatives and evidence-based practice
• Serving as a patient advocate and resources for staff, patients, and caregivers

Candidates must demonstrate strong clinical judgment, leadership, and the ability to quickly adapt to diverse patient populations across the lifespan. This position requires physical stamina, flexibility in scheduling, and a commitment to delivering exceptional care aligned with VA's I CARE values. The major duties and responsibilities of a Registered Nurse (Float Pool) include but are not limited to:

1. Leads the provision of nursing care to patients with complex care needs utilizing the nursing process in alignment with the ANA Standards of Nursing Practice.
2. Applies clinical knowledge/judgment to lead staff involvement in planning, decision-making, and evaluating outcomes within the immediate practice setting.
3. Improves Veteran/patient driven care by resolving experience issues such as coordination of care, timeliness or process issues, common themes of dissatisfaction, or environment of care concerns for the immediate practice setting.
4. Serves as an advocate for patients, families, and caregivers, improving outcomes for the immediate practice setting.
5. Demonstrates the ability to improve the effectiveness of communications and interactions with others, to inspire their cooperation and confidence to ensure safe and effective outcomes in the current practice setting.
6. Considers alternative courses of action. Respects the opinions, abilities, and contributions of others. Encourages individual growth and development.
7. Participates in the advancement of the profession through mentoring, precepting, and/or teaching.
8. Assesses the immediate practice setting to identify efficient, cost-effective care delivery.
9. Leads initiatives for expanding best techniques to identify and apply patient preferences to shared care delivery decisions in the immediate practice settings.

Preferred Experience:

• Minimum 3-5 years of acute care RN experience across multiple settings, including ER, demonstrating adaptability and clinical versatility.
• Participation in professional governance or performance improvement initiatives, such as unit-based council membership, quality improvement projects, or evidence-based practice committees, demonstrating a commitment to advancing nursing practice beyond the bedside.
• Peer leadership and charge nurse experience, including the ability to delegate effectively, serve as a resource to less experienced staff, and provide real-time clinical guidance across varied unit environments.
• Demonstrated professional accountability and self-direction, including a history of consistent adherence to policies and procedures, proactive communication with leadership, timely completion of competencies and required training, and the ability to practice autonomously.
