Job Description:\n\nDOT Construction is seeking an experienced, hands-on Working Superintendent to lead commercial construction projects throughout South Texas. This is not a position for someone who manages exclusively from a trailer. Our Working Superintendents are expected to maintain a strong daily field presence, understand how the work is being built, assist with layout and field coordination when necessary, and lead subcontractors and company personnel by example. The Working Superintendent will be responsible for the day-to-day field execution of the project, including safety, quality, scheduling, manpower coordination, subcontractor management, material planning, inspections, documentation, owner/GC coordination, and overall project readiness. The ideal candidate understands both how to build the work and how to manage the work. Field Leadership & Project Execution Run the Project in the Field: Take ownership of daily field operations and ensure work is performed safely, correctly, efficiently, and in accordance with the project schedule. Be a Working Superintendent:Maintain an active field presence and be willing to assist with layout, verification, installation, troubleshooting, temporary conditions, punch work, and other hands-on activities when necessary to keep the project moving. Lead by Example:Set expectations for productivity, professionalism, cleanliness, safety, quality, and accountability for company crews and subcontractors. Manage Multiple Trades:Coordinate subcontractors including, but not limited to: Sitework and concreteStructural and miscellaneous steelMetal framing and drywallDoors, frames, and hardwareAcoustical ceilingsFlooring and finishesMillwork and specialtiesRoofing and exterior finishesElectricalPlumbingHVAC / MechanicalFire protectionLow-voltage systemsOther commercial construction trades Maintain Production:Establish daily and weekly production goals, monitor actual progress, identify declining productivity early, and implement corrective measures before schedule impacts occur. Scheduling & Look-Ahead Planning Know What Is Coming Before It Becomes a Problem The Superintendent is expected to understand not only today's activities, but what will be required several weeks ahead. Responsibilities include: Maintain a detailed 2-to-3-week construction look-ahead schedule.Coordinate field activities with the overall project schedule.Determine upcoming manpower requirements.Identify predecessor activities and schedule constraints.Verify that materials are ordered before they are required.Confirm subcontractor mobilization dates.Coordinate inspections and testing.Identify long-lead material concerns.Identify drawing, RFI, submittal, or procurement issues that could affect production.Develop recovery plans when work begins falling behind schedule. A successful Superintendent should rarely be surprised by tomorrow's work. Drawing, Specification & Scope Management Build It According to the Contract Documents The Working Superintendent must be capable of reading and interpreting:Architectural drawingsStructural drawingsCivil drawingsMechanical drawingsElectrical drawingsPlumbing drawingsProject specificationsShop drawingsSubmittalsRFIsAddendaASIsField directivesManufacturer installation requirements You will be expected to compare field conditions against the contract documents and identify conflicts before work is installed incorrectly. Catch Conflicts Early When information is missing, conflicting, or unclear:Identify the issue.Document the condition.Notify the Project Manager.Assist in preparing an RFI.Track the issue through resolution.Avoid allowing crews to install questionable work simply to maintain production. We expect Superintendents to identify problems while they can still be managed—not after they become rework. Subcontractor Management The Working Superintendent will serve as DOT Construction's primary field representative and will be responsible for holding subcontractors accountable for their contractual obligations. Responsibilities include:Coordinate subcontractor mobilization.Conduct daily coordination with trade foremen.Verify manpower is appropriate for scheduled production.Confirm materials and equipment are available.Monitor subcontractor quality.Coordinate trade sequencing.Resolve field conflicts.Monitor subcontractor safety compliance.Track incomplete and deficient work.Manage punch-list completion.Document subcontractor delays or performance concerns.Communicate significant issues immediately to the Project Manager. The Superintendent is expected to maintain professional working relationships while still holding every trade accountable for scope, schedule, safety, and quality. Quality Control Build It Right the First Time DOT Construction expects our Superintendents to manage quality proactively rather than relying on a final punch list to identify problems. Responsibilities include:Review work before installation.Verify dimensions and layout.Confirm that approved materials are being installed.Review applicable submittals and shop drawings.Coordinate required mockups.Inspect completed work continuously.Maintain quality-control documentation.Identify deficiencies immediately.Require corrective action before subsequent work conceals defective installation.Prepare areas for owner, architect, engineer, and jurisdictional inspections. The goal is simple, minimize rework and eliminate preventable punch-list items. Safety Management Safety Is Field Leadership Responsibility The Working Superintendent is responsible for maintaining a safe and professional jobsite. Responsibilities include:Enforce DOT Construction safety requirements.Maintain compliance with applicable OSHA requirements.Conduct or participate in toolbox talks and pre-task planning.Review Job Hazard Analyses / Job Safety Analyses as required.Maintain proper barricades and access controls.Verify required PPE.Maintain clean access and egress.Coordinate elevated work.Monitor ladder, scaffold, lift, and fall-protection requirements.Correct unsafe conditions immediately.Maintain strong housekeeping expectations. Safety concerns are expected to be corrected when identified—not deferred until later. Material & Equipment Management The Working Superintendent will coordinate closely with the Project Manager to make sure field operations are properly supported. Responsibilities include:Review upcoming material requirements.Verify approved submittals before purchasing or installation.Coordinate deliveries.Confirm material quantities.Verify materials upon arrival.Coordinate unloading and staging.Protect stored materials.Monitor material usage and waste.Identify shortages early.Coordinate rental equipment and lifting requirements.Maintain organized laydown and storage areas. Crews should not lose productive time because required materials or equipment were not planned. Communication & Documentation Keep the Project Team Informed The Superintendent will provide clear, accurate, and timely communication regarding project status. When additional work is requested: 1. Identify that the work may be outside the contracted scope. 2. Notify the Project Manager. 3. Document labor, equipment, and materials. 4. Take photographs when appropriate. 5. Track time associated with work. 6. Obtain appropriate authorization whenever possible before proceeding. Protecting the company's contractual position is part of the Superintendent's responsibility. What We Look for in a Superintendent DOT Construction values field leaders who take complete ownership of their projects. A successful Working Superintendent should be able to confidently explain:What was accomplished today.How many people worked on each activity.Whether production met expectations.What will happen tomorrow.What materials are needed next.Which subcontractors need to be onsite.Which inspections are approaching.What items are affecting the critical path.What RFIs or submittals remain unresolved.What could delay the project over the next 2–3 weeks.What corrective actions are being taken. If something is going wrong, we expect our Superintendent to identify it early, communicate it clearly, and develop a solution. Minimum Qualifications Qualified candidates should have:10+ years of commercial construction field experience preferred.Previous experience as a Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent, General Foreman, Senior Foreman, or comparable field leadership position.Strong knowledge of commercial construction means and methods.Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.Experience coordinating multiple subcontractors.Understanding construction sequencing and scheduling.Working knowledge of OSHA construction safety practices.Ability to perform construction layout and verify dimensions.Strong communication and leadership skills.Ability to document daily construction activities.Basic computer, tablet, and smartphone proficiency.Ability to communicate professionally with owners, architects, engineers, subcontractors, inspectors, and project management. Experience with Procore, Bluebeam, Microsoft Project, Microsoft Office, or similar construction-management software is a plus. Physical & Jobsite Requirements Candidates must be capable of working in an active construction environment and performing normal Superintendent duties, including:Walking on jobsites for extended periods.Climbing stairs and ladders.Accessing elevated work areas.Working indoors and outdoors.Working in South Texas weather conditions.Reviewing work from lifts, scaffolds, or elevated platforms where properly authorized and protected.Occasionally lifting or assisting with construction materials and equipment.Traveling between project locations when required.
