HVAC Mechanic I (S)

The North Carolina Department of Administration is seeking applicants for an HVAC Technician for our Facility Management division. The primary mission of Facility Management is to provide a safe and healthful work environment for employees and the public in a cost effective and energy efficient manner. This mission is accomplished by performing routine, preventive, and emergency maintenance to state facilities owned by and allocated to the Department of Administration. The HVAC Mechanic position troubleshoots, calibrates, repairs, and maintains and operates the DDC BAS (Direct Digital Control - Building Automation System) as well as components and sub-systems of an overall HVAC system including electric/electronics speed controllers, pneumatic sensors, electric/pneumatic valves, motors, humidistat's, pumps, chillers, condensers, air handling units and miscellaneous control elements.

Key Responsibilities:

• Installing and servicing HVAC equipment.
• Troubleshooting and repairing chilled water distribution systems (chillers).
• Perform preventative maintenance on multiple types of HVAC equipment.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences:

• Experience installing and servicing HVAC equipment.
• Experience troubleshooting chilled water distribution systems (chillers).
• Experience troubleshooting and repairing control systems.
• Experience performing preventative maintenance on multiple types of HVAC equipment.
• Individual in this position should be able to perform a full range of work associated with the construction, maintenance and repair of air conditioning systems and associated air handling, chilled water distribution, and control mechanisms.
• Experience servicing computer room a/c systems and install and repair VFDs as well as ability to repair pneumatic controllers, actuators and pressure independent valves.
• Experience with operating DDC automation systems for building controls, diagnose mechanical/electrical problems using DDC system, train others and diagnose equipment malfunctions and prescribe repair procedures.

Additional Expectations:

• The position requires standing for long periods of time and performing manual labor.
• The individual hired for this position must be capable of strenuous lifting, crawling and working at heights up to sixty-five feet or more as well as working in confined spaces such as steam tunnels and manholes.
• The position may require exposure to extreme environmental conditions.
• The position requires the ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/ or in excess of 20 pounds of force frequently and/ or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
• The position may require working in close quarters, crawl spaces, shafts, manholes, small, enclosed rooms, sewage and water line pipes and other confined areas.
• The individual hired for this position must be familiar with building, life and safety codes.
• Employee is required to wear a uniform, picture ID badge, use safety equipment and follow safety regulations which are provided by the state.

Management Preference:

• Division prefers applicants with at least five (5) years of progressive experience in industrial/ commercial HVAC work.

Necessary Requirements:

• Valid NC Driver's License. Out of State Applicants must have valid Driver's License and acquire NC Driver's License within 60 days of hire.
• Certificate of Completion Asbestos Operation Maintenance and Removal Training within one year of hire.
• Certificate of Completion Entry Permit Confined Space Training within one year of hire.
• Current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations part 82, subpart F.
• Respirator medical evaluation is required to verify the individual's ability to wear and use a respirator. This is a condition of employment.

Minimum Education and Experience:

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of progressive experience in the installation, maintenance or repair of air conditioning chillers, air handling, chilled water distribution and control systems; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualifications Requires current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations part 82, subpart F.
