The Lead Program Coordinator's focus is on facilitating a Scouting experience for youth/participants that may not otherwise have the opportunity. This position's focus will be on creating, developing, and training others in curriculum using Cub Scout Adventures as the base. The Lead Program Coordinator is a member of the Community Programs Team and may serve several different programs within the team. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIESProgram Facilitation (50% of time)The Lead Program Coordinator is expected to facilitate regular Scouting activities at identified program sites to which they are assigned or at Base Camp. The Program Coordinator is expected to plan and run a fun, engaging, and age-appropriate program which is focused on using Scouting materials and to present this program with enthusiasm in a context-sensitive manner. The Program Coordinator will work with supervisors and on-site program coordinators to appropriately manage behavior of youth in the program. Program Coordinators will be trained to run all Northern Star Scouting Community Programs.Program Planning, Implementation, and Evaluation (40% of time)Specific job duties might change due to seasonal program changes and special projects, but would likely fall into the following categories.Drafts and recommends innovative and engaging curriculum for all partner sites that follows the Cub Scout program.Work to revise and improve program materials in existing areas.Works with District Director to review user feedback related to In-School programs and collaborates to identify solutions for areas requiring corrective action.Staff Development & Supervision (10% of time)Assist in the execution of monthly, quarterly, and supplemental trainings as outlined by the District Director.Provide leadership to the Program Coordinator team helping to ensure overall program quality.Assist in on-site training for new Program Coordinators.Help maintain program material inventory with the District Director within budget parameters. SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIESProvides support to other council operations, as a member of the Northern Star Scouting team.Supports Base Camp operations with ongoing projects related to building supervision, facility, maintenance, staff training, camping standards, and other duties.Understands and adheres to all policies and procedures in order to maintain federal, state and BSA standards in all programs and facilities.Carries out other duties as assigned by team leader or department head.Upholds Council/Scouting America policies and presents a positive, professional attitude and image in the workplace and while attending official functions in the community. Represents Scouting in the community, promoting awareness and understanding of Scouting.In all aspects of the position, develops systems and solve problems that will improve operations and provide quality customer service. Works to implement procedures to enhance the accuracy, quality and flow of information between staff members and volunteers. QUALIFICATIONSGeneral: Must be age 21 or older per National BSA leadership standards, and proficient in English. Proficiency in Somali or Spanish is preferred though not required.Education: High school diploma or equivalent required, with a Bachelor's degree in education with focus in outdoor, experiential, or environmental preferred – or at least 4 years of equivalent professional experience in a related field. Experience: Must have some experience working with urban youth ages 7-21 in education, youth development, recreation, social services, or after school/community programs. Must be willing and able to complete required training and learn details of the Scouting program. Budget adherence, program development/implementation experience, and strong organizational skills required. Background and knowledge of Scouting is helpful, though not required. Commitment to the mission, aims, and methods of Scouting is required.Communication and interpersonal skills: Effective interpersonal communications are needed to work with youth, adults, supervisor, and co-workers. Must be able to work with youth of diverse backgrounds and with community education partners. Must listen to others' needs and proactively respond appropriately. Must be able to work independently as well as cooperatively and demonstrate a positive attitude. Must strive for consistent, quality, on-time communication with others. Must be able to complete required paperwork and keep accurate records.Confidentiality: Must maintain confidentiality of all information pertaining to partners, participants, and council – including staffing, compensation, and all business information.Technology/software: Must be able to adapt to changing technology and methods. Intermediate knowledge of Windows and MS Office; intermediate Outlook, Access, Word, and Excel skills are needed. Needs to use email and internet access. Utilizes computer software to construct, manipulate data and draw conclusions.Work mode: Be a model for the ideals of Scouting. Represent the council in a positive way. Work cooperatively with leadership and coworkers. Able to make and keep commitments, completing assignments on time. Be efficient at backdating and planning. Use innovation and adaptability to be most effective. Use all available resources efficiently. Accept coaching and skill development. Able to communicate expectations to others and manage several projects simultaneously. Refer to BSA's competencies as part of the Performance and Development System.Work environment: Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment, often under pressure. Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision after the initial 90-day training period. Exercises discretion and independent judgment. Must be able to identify and resolve problems and make decisions. Must be able to prioritize work under deadlines, work under time constraints, and handle multiple projects simultaneously. Must be able to take initiative and also play both leading and supporting roles. Must be able to manage projects from conception to implementation. Position may have frequent interruptions and requires ability to move from project to project at a moment's notice while maintaining a positive attitude. Must be detail-oriented and accurate.Work schedule: The position is scheduled to work 40 hours per week. Must be able to maintain regular attendance. Consistent schedule will be set by the District Director and will include weekdays, evenings, and weekends as demanded by workload or program calendar.Transportation: To serve site partners, a Program Coordinator needs to have a personal vehicle that is reliable. Pending submission of mileage reports and pending supervisor approval, mileage will be reimbursed at a rate no higher than the current IRS-approved guideline. Must provide proof of valid driver's license. Must carry automobile insurance at the levels of $100,000/$300,000/ $100,000. Must provide copy of proof of automobile insurance coverage each time it renews (typically every three or six months). ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTSMaterials and Equipment Used 100% of timeMotor vehicles (unless specified otherwise in employment letter), computers/printers, telephone, copiers, current technology tools, visual aids, council service center equipment, etc.Physical Activities and Requirements 100% of timeReaching, standing, walking, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, stretching, repetitive motions, computer keyboarding, driving a motor vehicle. While in office, work is usually sedentary. Occasional lifting of boxes, files, and equipment (up to 40 pounds). While working directly with youth, this position may have more physical requirements, possibly including lifting a youth member during the activities with or without assistance of another person.
