This role ensures comfort, dignity, and quality of life for terminally ill patients, while also supervising and directing the non-unionized Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs). The RN works closely with interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement care plans that reflect the patient’s needs and wishes. Patient Care & Symptom Management: Provide comprehensive nursing care to terminally ill patients, ensuring symptom management and comfort through medication administration and interventions as per physician orders. Assess and respond to patient needs, ensuring a dignified and comfortable end-of-life experience. Supervision & Delegation to CNAs: Supervise and guide non-unionized CNAs, ensuring they provide appropriate personal care and support per the patient’s care plan, facility standards, and their job description. Delegation of Tasks: Appropriately delegate nursing support tasks, such as assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs), patient hygiene, and mobility assistance, while ensuring safe, compassionate care. Mentorship & Education: Offer real-time guidance and mentorship to CNAs, providing feedback on performance while maintaining a respectful work environment. Ensuring Proper Documentation: Monitor CNA documentation of patient care to ensure it is accurate and complete. Unionized Nurse Protocols: As a unionized RN, you will adhere to the terms of the collective bargaining agreement, respecting union rules, work hours, and break schedules while carrying out your duties. Collaboration with Nurse Union: Work collaboratively with the nurse union, following contract terms and ensuring fair, respectful treatment of nursing staff. Respect for Boundaries: While supervising CNAs, maintain a professional and respectful relationship with all staff, acknowledging and adhering to union guidelines. Interdisciplinary Team Collaboration: Participate in interdisciplinary team (IDT) rounds, contributing to patient care plans, symptom management, and family education. Collaborate with other healthcare professionals to ensure holistic patient care. Documentation & Compliance: Accurately document nursing assessments, interventions, and communications with CNAs, patients, and families. Ensure all care provided complies with regulatory and quality standards. Family and Caregiver Support: Provide emotional support, education, and guidance to patients' families and caregivers, assisting them in navigating the emotional and physical challenges of end-of-life care. Infection Control & Safety: Adhere to infection control procedures and safety protocols to ensure a safe, comfortable environment for both patients and staff. Requirements Qualifications Required Current RN license (Compact or Montana) Minimum 1 year of recent experience in hospice, palliative care, critical care, or med-surg Experience working in a unionized healthcare environment (for RNs) Strong clinical judgment and communication skills Basic Life Support (BLS) certification Preferred Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurse (CHPN) Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR); experience with Home Care Home Base is a plus Core Competencies Compassionate, patient-centered approach Effective delegation and supervision of CNAs Understanding of union contract provisions for RNs Clear communication and conflict resolution Team collaboration and adaptability Cultural and spiritual sensitivity Summary Join a mission-driven organization that values flexibility, autonomy, and collaboration while serving patients across our local Western Montana communities.
