Professional Tutor (English) – Promise Zone Tutoring and Learning Center - Part-time This position is responsible to provide direct tutoring for high school students (grades 9-12) and help oversee the operations of the Promise Zone Tutoring and Learning Center. This individual must possess an interest in working with diverse learners in the high school setting. This position is available in the Fall and Winter semesters, with potential work available during the summer semesters. In the Fall and Winter semesters, this position will provide tutoring services to Innovation Central High School students. During the Summer semesters, tutors may participate in assisting summer programs that Promise Zone is supporting. Requisition ID: 1190 Employee Group : Contingency Schedule : up to 28 hours per week Compensation : $16.00 - $20.00 depending on qualifications Reports to : Promise Zone Tutoring and Learning Center Coordinator Posting Opens: 09/02/2026 Posting Closes: Open Until Filled ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Provide individual and small group tutoring in content-specific courses in both face-to-face and online formats either in the Promise Zone Tutoring and Learning Center or in a designated classroom. Demonstrate proficiency with the curriculum of the high school courses in assigned content area. These courses include, but are not limited to, English 9, English 10, English 11, English 12, etc. Assist the Tutorial Coordinator with the operation of the Promise Zone Tutoring and Learning Center. Help supervise, train, and serve as a mentor to the student tutors. Work cooperatively maintain rapport, and a close working relationship with students, staff, faculty, and administration. Promote and develop the academic success of students by encouraging a positive attitude and independent, self-actualized learning. Assist with the management and security of all resources. Discuss the Promise Zone Tutoring and Learning Center services with students during class visitations to the Promise Zone Tutoring and Learning Center. Communicate with the Tutorial Coordinator as needed regarding the individual needs of students. Keep the Tutorial Coordinator informed by any problems experienced in the Promise Zone Tutoring and Learning Center by students or staff. Attend Promise Zone Tutoring and Learning Center meetings and trainings as requested by the Tutorial Coordinator. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned. Follow College policy on the Family Educational Right to Privacy Act (FERPA). JOB SPECIFICATIONS Qualifications Associate degree or higher preferred. Demonstrate content knowledge of areas needing tutoring. Experience teaching/tutoring students preferred. Skills Possession of good people service skills with a high school student-oriented focus. Ability to work with a variety of computer software applications. Ability to assist students of various cultural, ethnic and educational backgrounds by being helpful, patient, encouraging and understanding. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, to assist students and staff in a professional manner. Demonstrate professionalism and possession of character qualities including organization, promptness, courtesy, confidentiality and dependability. Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Ability to work effectively with a diverse student population and faculty team. Proficiency in using instructional technology and learning management systems (e.g.,Gmail, Canvas, Blackboard). Physical Demands This position requires regular interactions with students that may involve moving around the tutorial center, standing while providing in person tutoring, or long periods of sitting while providing virtual support. Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds. Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time. Mental Demands Customer service-oriented, with the ability to relate well to a diverse array of campus clients, including faculty, staff and students. Strong organizational skills to work with multiple students at one time. Analytical and problem-solving abilities. High level of creativity, energy, enthusiasm and motivation. An interest in working with diverse student populations, who represent a wide range of age, ethnicity, national origin, and ability. Demonstrated responsiveness, initiative, and organizational and problem-solving abilities. Ability to perform routine and unexpected duties. A willingness and an ability to learn college systems. High energy level with enthusiasm and an interest in helping and supporting students and colleagues. Ability to work under pressure while possessing mature judgment and flexibility in regards to interruptions and schedule changes. Must use good judgment in handling sensitive or difficult situations in a professional manner. Working Conditions The work environment is team-oriented and can be fast-paced. This position requires the individual to transition smoothly between independent and collaborative efforts. GRCC will comply with any mandated health and safety requirements. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment that calls for flexibility/adaptability and the ability to handle multiple interruptions and make quick decisions.
