Bus Assistant

This position supervises students at the bus stop at morning arrival and afternoon dismissal; assists in providing safe and efficient transportation for special education students in order that they may be able to take full advantage of the education program and process. 10 month - 6 hours/day $15.15 - 15.96/hour + Benefits All P.U.S.D. employees must have an IVP fingerprint card.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Provides a safe/healthy environment and awareness of safety conditions at the bus loading area.

• Maintains control and supervises student behavior while waiting for buses to arrive.
• Reports all unsafe conditions or continuing student behavior problems to the Transportation Director.
• Assists students in identifying the proper bus to board and to know arrival and departure times and destinations of the bus. Assists transferring students and provides assistance and/or directions to students and adults as other needs arise, i.e., phoning other schools, the transportation center, parents, etc. Assists in arranging transportation for transferees who have missed their bus.
• Cares for emotional children stressed or frightened due to busing changes.
• Deals with all unauthorized parking in bus loading areas.
• Creates a completely safe atmosphere for all passengers in cooperation with the driver.
• Monitors and maintains good behavior of students while riding the bus.
• Aides in getting students on and off the bus.
• Assists students in crossing the street.
• Ensures that all students are secure in their seats.
• Assists the driver with all paperwork (route, health cards, etc.).
• Maintains a knowledge of bus routes, including schedule time and emergency phone numbers of parents/guardians Performs any services necessary to keep students and the bus clean and sanitary, i.e., wipe runny noses, change diapers, etc. Contacts with school nurses and school aides.
• Maintains working knowledge of the special bus equipment, i.e., wheelchair lift, straps, restraints, etc.
• Assists the driver with evacuation drills as prescribed by law.
• Assists in directing traffic for the driver in congested areas at the schools.
• Performs and passes a physical performance test (PPT) per Department of Public Safety (DPS) standards.

• Ability to work cooperatively and courteously with staff, students, parents and community members.
• Ability to handle confrontation and conflict without an emotional response.
• Knowledge regarding transportation safety practices and procedures.
• Ability to oversee and control a large number of children.
• Ability to act appropriately in an emergency situation.
• Ability to learn and utilize special bus equipment.

Qualifications & Requirements

Education & Experience

High School diploma or equivalent; CPR and First Aid Certification desired

Work Environment

Indoors and outdoors, with exposure to all weather conditions and temperatures. Exposure to all types of traffic conditions. Exposure to noise, dust, gas and fumes. The noise level in the work environment is generally moderate and may become excessively noisy at times. Contact with employees, students and public.
