We seek a highly motivated Cloud Database developer who enjoys working in a small but passionate team of like-minded software developers, scientists, and bioinformatics experts that value technical work that contributes to improving public health by enabling biomedical research and discovery. In this job, you will take part in the development of a novel Data Management/Analytics Center in support of a major national research project in the area of translational science, leveraging an array of modern technologies to develop all the database components necessary for the system to accept data contributions; perform quality control; enable meaningful search, transform and reorganize data via ETL/ELT and release those datasets in a curated, consistent format using established data standards. You should have a solid understanding of database design, development, and management using AWS services and be able to construct data pipelines, debug and analyze code, and work with team members to ensure a high-quality end product. This person will lead the design, development, and maintenance of all the projects' datastores and work closely with web and software developers to make data available to applications, front-end systems, and analytics engines.


Core Responsibilities:

• Provide development and administration support for numerous relational databases in an AWS Cloud-based development environment, including SQL development (stored procedures and triggers), SQL and index performance tuning, and database design
• Evaluate and recommend other cloud-based data storage mechanisms, to optimize the design and architecture of the platform based on requirements
• Develop and maintain Extract-Transform-Load (ETL) scripts, SQL scripts, and ETL schedules leveraging schema-on-read services such as AWS Athena with Glue Crawlers
• Create complex data pipelines leveraging services such as AWS Lambda Functions, Lambda Triggers, State Machines, and Amazon Kinesis Data Streams
• Work with scientists and analysts to fully understand requirements and convert them into appropriate technical solutions
• Participate in the refinement and development of user stories, assessing the impact of new development on current database implementation and providing a level of effort estimates during Sprint planning
• Provide development and administration support for numerous NoSQL datastores in an AWS Cloud-based development environment, including schemaless design, key structure management, global index creation, JSON document schema creation, and overall database design

Requirements

• B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science or equivalent work experience
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in database design, development and management
• AWS or other Cloud relevant expertise in Database Management and Design
• Knowledge of NoSQL datastores design and implementation such as DynamoDB, DocumentDB or MongoDB, Apache Solr or AWS OpenSearch, Graph databases such as Neo4j or Neptune
• Extensive data migration skills and working experience with ETL concepts and tools
• Familiarity with backup & recovery, performance tuning, and optimization
• Demonstrated experience with Relational Databases such as MySQL or PostgreSQL
• Understanding of transactional database and data warehouse architecture, design, and development

Preferred Qualifications:

• Understanding/instantiating conceptual, logical, and physical data models
• Knowledge in ER Diagram and design of logical and physical data modeling
• Familiarity with Infrastructure as code (IaC) such as CloudFormation or Serverless Framework for deploying data management solutions
• Experience working in an iterative software development life cycle
• Experience in government health care programs
• Working knowledge of Java, PHP, Python, Node.js, or other programming languages
• Background in bioinformatics or computational biology
• Background in computational statistics & data analysis
