Job Description Summary Under the supervision of the Boiler Shop Supervisor or his designated alternate, performs preventive and corrective maintenance on all boilers and associated equipment. Operates high‑pressure steam and hot‑water boilers, pumps, valves, regulators, steam traps, pipefitting, cleaning and painting. Contributes to a team effort and harmonious working relationship with others in the Engineering and Facilities Department and throughout MUSC. Maintains continuity between individual job assignments. Performs work in a most efficient and safe manner. Performs related and non‑related duties as required by the Boiler Supervisor. Responsibilities 10% – Clean and paint the boiler room, pumps, valves and lines, ensuring the work area remains clean and orderly. 30% – Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on all boilers and all safety devices, open boilers for cleaning and inspection, and conduct manual and tear‑down maintenance on steam, water, air, oil and gas valves from ½ inch up to 8 inches. 30% – Maintain air, oil, gas and water pressure regulators, reducers and steam traps to ensure proper operation; perform preventive and corrective maintenance on water, oil and condensate‑return pumps from packing to full tear‑down; install and repair pipes (black iron, copper, PVC) ranging in size from ¼ inch to 3 inches. 30% – Check all operating boilers once a day for proper operation, pressure, temperature, water and oil levels, fuel and air mixture, and ensure boiler logs are completed; perform weekly chemical tests on boiler water and adjust chemical feed and blowdown as required. Qualifications High school diploma and at least three years of trade experience directly related to the area of employment. Some positions require a commercial driver’s license. Some positions require EPA‑approved freon‑recovery certification. Physical Requirements Ability to perform job functions in upright, seated, walking/mobile, climbing, indoor and outdoor (all weather and temperature extremes), below‑ground, elevated, confined/cramped spaces, kneeling, bending, twisting at the waist, pinching, crawling, and from kneeling positions. Must possess good grip strength, fully use both hands and arms, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, fully use both legs, reach in all directions, maintain tactile and olfactory sensory functions, maintain 20/40 vision (corrected), match or discriminate between colors, have good peripheral vision and hearing acuity, operate winches, come‑alongs, jacks and other equipment, qualify physically for respirator use, and have dexterity to use hand tools. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. unassisted; lift 50 lbs. or more assisted; carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs. on ladders, stairs, or on a plane; push or pull equipment carts.
