Overview

Under the supervision and direction of a Registered Nurse the behavioral health patient safety attendant will provide care to a patient by sitting with and diligently watching the patient while meeting the established criteria in accordance with established methods and procedures of the Medical Center.

Responsibilities

• Maintain continuous visual observation of assigned patients to ensure a safe and secure environment at all times.
• Monitor and report changes in patient behavior mental status condition or activities to the Registered Nurse (RN) immediately.
• Adhere to all patient safety protocols including Close Observation and Suicidal Patient Monitoring procedures.
• Maintain a clean safe and organized patient environment reporting maintenance or safety concerns promptly.
• Follow infection prevention and control practices including universal precautions.
• Accurately document patient observations and activities on required monitoring records and observation logs.
• Provide clear and accurate shift-to-shift reports communicating patient status observations and changes in care plans.
• Use verbal redirection and approved de-escalation techniques to support patient safety and manage challenging behaviors.
• Establish and maintain appropriate professional boundaries while interacting with patients.
• Provide patients with routine explanations regarding care and activities while refraining from counseling or offering personal opinions.
• Immediately notify nursing staff when patient assistance or intervention is required.
• Escort patients to diagnostic tests procedures therapeutic activities and other scheduled appointments as needed.
• Demonstrate focused attention on patient observation duties minimizing distractions and maintaining vigilance throughout the shift.
• Uphold organizational values and standards of professionalism compassion respect and patient-centered care.
• Collaborate effectively with nursing staff and other healthcare team members to support quality patient care.
• Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.

• Ability to follow instructions and report patient behavior accurately

• Understanding of patient safety and infection control protocols
• Respectful of patient dignity and privacy
• Reliable and punctual
• Comfortable working with patients with dementia mental health issues or those at risk for falls/self-harm

Credentials

• BLS Basic Life Saving Certification

Education

• High School diploma or equivalent required or must obtain GED within 6 months of hire date.
