Duties Summary
Performs tasks in support of engineering functions; and performs other related duties as required. There is one (1) immediate permanent full-time vacancy with the Department of Public Works - Traffic Division in Hilo. Working Hours for the vacancy with the Department of Public Works: Monday - Friday; 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This Engineering Support Technician I, SR-11 position is a career ladder position. The next level in the series is Engineering Support Technician II, SR-15, $4,221/month. Persons hired into career ladder positions must meet minimum qualifications for the next level in the career ladder series, perform work at the higher level, and meet performance requirements to move to the next level in the career ladder series. The eligible list may be used for other permanent and temporary vacancies as they arise during the life of the list. Temporary appointment may lead to conversion to permanent appointment.

Examples of Duties
- Assists engineer in reviewing development proposals.
- Keeps and updates required engineering and water quality data and reports.
- Keeps records of communications including general communications regarding availability of water, subdivisions, change of zone, land use changes, and etc.
- Keeps and updates bacteriological, turbidity, chemical, and chloride and other related data.
- Prepares water consumption reports and graphs by systems and subsystems.
- Makes computations and prepares charts and visual aids.
- Compares master meter reading with customer meter readings.
- Assits with surveys and public notifications for customer information and regulation compliance.
- Assists with inspection of construction for compliance with approved plans and specifications.
- Maintains physical and electronic files and records.
- May assist in preparaing CAD generated drawings, sketches, and schemes; prepares GIS generated maps and exhibts.
- Assists engineers with field trips, public informational meetings, workshops, seminars, conferences, meetings, class presentations, and compaction tests.
- Works with portable testing equipment for the analyses of turbidity, chloride, ph, chlorine residual, and other water quality parameters available from the equipment.
- May operate a county vehicle to assist profesional personnel in support of engineering functions and/or perform construction inspections; and to support engineering and technical staff with studies, investigations, and inspections.
- Assists with traffic safety and traffic calming investigations, including collecting and compiling data, to assist Engineer with planning projects to help reduce traffic accidents and lower vehicular speeds.
- Reviews simple plans and specifications for conformance with applicable laws, rules, regulations, and codes.
- Assists in the design of simple traffic safety projects.
- May serve as the contact for the One-Call Center Program.
- Catalogs and maintains engineering reference materials and information.
- Meets with the public to answer routine questions regarding availability of water and requirements for service.
- May assist with various tasks involving administrative and clerical matters.
Training and Experience:
