Position Summary

River Rouge School District is seeking a dependable, skilled, and motivated Building and Grounds Maintenance Worker to support the maintenance, safety, and overall appearance of district facilities and grounds. The successful candidate will perform routine maintenance, repairs, preventive maintenance, and groundskeeping to ensure that school buildings, athletic facilities, and outdoor spaces remain safe, clean, functional, and welcoming for students, staff, families, and community members.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate initiative, sound judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of the district's Facilities and Operations team.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Building Maintenance and Repairs

• Perform routine maintenance and repairs involving doors, locks, windows, walls, ceilings, flooring, furniture, and other building components.
• Complete minor carpentry, painting, plumbing, and other general maintenance tasks within the employee's training and authorization.
• Inspect buildings and equipment to identify maintenance needs, potential hazards, and required repairs.
• Assist with preventive maintenance of building systems and equipment.
• Respond to maintenance work orders and complete assigned tasks in a timely manner.
• Report major repairs, equipment failures, and safety concerns to the appropriate supervisor.

Groundskeeping and Outdoor Maintenance

• Maintain lawns, landscaped areas, sidewalks, parking lots, playgrounds, and athletic fields.
• Operate lawn mowers, trimmers, blowers, and other groundskeeping equipment safely.
• Remove litter, maintain outdoor areas, and assist with seasonal landscaping.
• Perform snow and ice removal, including salting and clearing designated walkways, entrances, and parking areas.
• Assist with the setup and maintenance of athletic fields and outdoor facilities for school and community events.

Preventive Maintenance and Safety

• Assist with scheduled inspections and preventive maintenance activities.
• Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a safe and orderly condition.
• Follow established safety procedures and use appropriate personal protective equipment.
• Promptly report unsafe conditions, building deficiencies, and potential risks to students, staff, and visitors.
• Follow district procedures for the proper storage and use of maintenance materials and supplies.

Districtwide Support

• Move furniture, equipment, and supplies between district facilities as assigned.
• Assist with preparing classrooms, offices, gymnasiums, and other spaces for school activities and special events.
• Maintain accurate records of completed work orders, materials used, and maintenance activities as required.
• Work cooperatively with maintenance personnel, custodians, administrators, and other district employees.
• Perform other related duties as assigned by the Maintenance Supervisor, Chief Engineer, or district administration.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Demonstrated experience in building maintenance, groundskeeping, construction, or a related field preferred.
• Basic knowledge of general maintenance practices, including carpentry, plumbing, painting, and minor repairs.
• Ability to safely operate common maintenance and groundskeeping tools and equipment.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and complete assigned tasks within established timelines.
• Ability to communicate professionally and work effectively with district employees and the public.
• Valid Michigan driver's license and acceptable driving record, as required for assigned duties.
• Ability to pass all required employment background checks.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous maintenance experience in a school district, commercial facility, or public building.
• Experience with preventive maintenance programs and computerized work-order systems.
• Experience operating snow-removal equipment, tractors, commercial lawn equipment, or other specialized maintenance machinery.
• Basic knowledge of heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems.
• Relevant technical training, trade certifications, or vocational education.

Physical Requirements

The position requires the ability to perform physical work, including standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing ladders, and working indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
