In-house Organ Recovery Coordinator (Critical Care RNs Desired!)

Overview Sierra Donor Services (SDS) is seeking a dynamic team member to support organ donation activities as the In-house Organ Recovery Coordinator at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. This role uses critical care skills with autonomy to facilitate organ donation processes and lifelike outcomes for patients awaiting transplantation. The position involves extensive on-call services, significant daily presence in the assigned hospital, and collaboration with medical, nursing and other departments to support donation education, quality assurance, and outreach. Responsibilities Perform daily duties to meet the needs of potential donors, donors, donor families, hospital personnel, physicians, and the OPO. Provide rapid on-site response to referrals. Primary responsibilities occur in the assigned facility with potential expansion during staffing shortages or other needs. Evaluate potential donors and families, obtain appropriate authorization for donation, conduct Medical/Social History interviews, assist families through end-of-life discussions, participate in family meetings, provide donation information, and manage donors medically prior to recovery. Direct the placement of anatomical gifts and provide transplant surgeons with necessary information. Coordinate and assist in the surgical recovery of organs and perioperative management of the donor when needed. Coordinate organ placement/allocation with transplant programs and surgeons. Determine medical suitability of organs for designated recipients in line with CMS, UNOS, AOPO, and company policy. Coordinate with tissue services to facilitate tissue recovery as appropriate. Assist in surgical recovery and perioperative management. Arrange transportation for organ recovery teams, coordinate surgical recovery/packaging, and arrange transportation of organs for transplant and/or research. Maintain knowledge of pulsatile preservation and manage all lab specimens for shipment to laboratories per policy. Support Hospital Development Coordinator to identify leaders and assess their influence and needs. Collaborate with leaders to promote donation, assist in policy/procedure development, and serve as an expert clinical resource on organ and tissue donation. Participate in hospital decision-making programs and committees that influence organ donation, promote donation, and seek opportunities for collaboration. Facilitate the donation process. Maintain high visibility by rounds to critical care units with medical teams and serve as the designated hospital resource for organ donation. Provide donor/referral follow-up to hospital staff individually or via post-recovery conferences. With the In-House Donation Specialist, develop, provide, and evaluate in-house training and in-service educational programs on all aspects of donation. Collect and report donation outcome data to clinical and administrative staff. Document hospital activities and update plans, goals, and issues regularly. Perform other duties as assigned. Physical Traits Discusses and listens to donor families, hospital personnel, and physicians. Reads charts, observes donors, and documents information. Walks, stands, and sits for extended periods. Lifts and carries containers up to 70 lbs. Drives to donor hospitals. Must be able to stand for more than eight hours a day and work under stress with interruptions and changing priorities. Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation are required. Qualifications Education Required: RN/PA or related healthcare degree or licensure, or OPO experience commensurate with job requirements. Experience: Minimum one to two years as a Donation Coordinator or Organ Recovery Coordinator. Licenses/Certifications: Valid driver license required and ability to pass MVR underwriting. May be required to use a privately owned vehicle during company business. Computer Skills: Working knowledge of computers and basic data entry skills are required.
