Job Description - Traffic Systems Technician I or II (2601379) Position Information TxDOT is seeking a Traffic Systems Technician I or II based in Houston, Texas, at the Traffic Systems Maintenance Office located at 6810 Old Katy Rd. This entry level position supports the maintenance of traffic signals, roadway illumination, and related traffic systems across the district. You will be part of a hands‑on team responsible for installing, maintaining, repairing, and troubleshooting traffic signal equipment, lighting systems, and communication devices that keep our roadways operating safely and efficiently. No prior experience is required; TxDOT provides training on equipment, systems, and safety procedures. Responsibilities Install, maintain, repair, and troubleshoot traffic signal equipment, lighting systems, and communication devices. Conduct routine work activities related to the installation, repair, troubleshooting and maintenance of traffic systems, communication, illumination and/or data collection devices/systems. Perform emergency repairs and maintenance of traffic signals, systems, lighting or traffic data collection equipment. Assist in inspecting construction methods, workmanship and maintenance procedures to ensure contractors follow plans and specifications. Assist in responding to complaints and identifying problems related to traffic signal timing or congestion; develop recommendations for long‑term solutions. Work with governmental and private entities concerning utilities and rights‑of‑way. Attend meetings with area engineers and contractors to resolve problems and implement solutions. Follow safety procedures when working near utilities such as high voltage lines, gas lines, water and sewage lines, and heavy traffic. Perform other job responsibilities as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Education High school graduate or equivalent Experience No experience required for Tech I. Minimum one year of relevant experience for Tech II. Licenses and Certifications Valid driver’s license; requires a commercial Class A CDL with an N endorsement or equivalent, obtained within 180 calendar days of employment. Military or Veteran applicants with a US military CDL equivalent must obtain a Texas Class A CDL within 180 days of employment. Competencies Knowledge of electrical construction procedures. Understanding of applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. Work safely with electrical systems up to 600 volts. Ability to use computers and related applications. Ability to communicate technical information effectively. Ability to interpret plans, schematics, blueprints, and maps. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions May work in heavy traffic; may require extensive statewide travel. Lift up to 50 lbs; carry up to 25 lbs; stoop, kneel, stand, walk long distances. Work outdoors; exposure to weather and temperature changes. Requires pre‑employment physical exam. Subject to random drug testing; must pass drug test and maintain security of agency infrastructure. Must be able to report for duty within 120 minutes of notification on a 24‑hour basis. Compensation Minimum salary: $45,000.00. Maximum salary: $70,000.00. Pay basis: Yearly. FLSA status: Nonexempt.
