Engine Mechanic / Repair Technician – Industrial Floor Equipment
This role starts as a contract-to-hire repair technician responsible for servicing a fleet of industrial scrubbers, concrete grinders, and floor sweepers. You will perform preventative maintenance, diagnose and repair small electric and petroleum engines, and ensure all rental flooring equipment is fully serviced and safe before it returns to customers. After the contract-to-hire period, you will transition into a field service technician position, traveling to customer sites to perform on-site repairs and provide excellent customer service.
Responsibilities
- Perform preventative maintenance (PM) on industrial scrubbers, concrete grinders, floor sweepers, and other flooring equipment.
- Troubleshoot and repair small engines, including both electric and petroleum-powered units, with a strong focus on accurate diagnosis.
- Disassemble and reassemble equipment to identify issues and perform correct repairs in a safe and efficient manner.
- Use hand tools, power tools, measuring tools, and specialty tools to service and repair equipment to completion.
- Inspect rental equipment upon return, identify needed repairs, and restore equipment to proper working condition before it is rented again.
- Develop strong troubleshooting skills during the training period to effectively diagnose equipment issues when working independently in the field.
- Address client complaints professionally and work to resolve issues promptly and thoroughly.
- Communicate clearly with customers about service repairs, explain findings, and provide updates in a respectful and professional manner.
- Utilize a service laptop or service phone while on the road to receive work orders, document repairs, and follow established communication procedures.
- Follow all safety procedures when operating and working around sit-down forklifts used to move equipment and materials.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area, adhering to facility safety markings and guidelines.
- Collaborate closely with team members and leadership, staying aligned on priorities and customer needs.
- Demonstrate a proactive, "put me in coach" attitude by taking initiative, assisting where needed, and supporting teammates.
- Ensure all fasteners, bolts, and mechanical connections are tightened properly and checked for safety and reliability.
- Represent the company professionally at customer sites within the assigned territory, including travel within the defined regional radius.
Essential Skills
- Hands-on experience in automotive repair, small engine repair, or related mechanical repair work.
- Strong proficiency in small engine repair, particularly for electric and petroleum-powered equipment (this is a key requirement).
- Ability to troubleshoot mechanical and basic electrical issues on small motors and industrial floor equipment.
- Mechanical aptitude with demonstrated ability to use ratchets, sockets, wrenches, and other common tools to tighten bolts and assemble components correctly.
- Experience with general mechanic work such as brake systems, welding, and fabrication is highly beneficial.
- Comfort working with hand tools, power tools, measuring tools, and specialty tools required for equipment service.
- High School diploma or GED combined with some form of automotive repair training or equivalent technical training.
- Ability to provide strong customer service, including discussing repairs with customers and de-escalating upset clients.
- Clear and effective communication skills, both in-person and over phone or digital communication tools.
- Reliability, strong work ethic, and a team-oriented mindset with a willingness to take on responsibilities rather than say "that is not my job."
- Basic familiarity with or willingness to learn the use of sit-down forklifts in a service environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Formal training or coursework in automotive repair, small engine repair, or a related technical field.
- Experience in welding and fabrication to support equipment repair and modification needs.
- Prior experience working with rental equipment or industrial floor care equipment is an advantage.
- Ownership of a personal tool set for mechanical work; having the majority of essential tools is preferred, though missing some tools is not disqualifying, as specialty tools are provided.
- Ability to remain calm and professional when handling customer concerns and complaints.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail when documenting repairs and following service procedures.
- Comfort working both in a shop environment and on the road as a field service technician.
- Positive, coachable attitude with a willingness to learn new equipment, systems, and processes.
Why Work Here?
You will join a well-established industry leader with a strong reputation for promoting from within and helping employees build long-term careers. Leadership teams have grown from entry-level roles, demonstrating a genuine commitment to internal development and advancement. You will benefit from a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, and vision coverage, 401(k), paid time off for vacation and sick leave, inclusion holidays, and bereavement leave. The role offers profit-sharing bonuses and seven paid holidays, including Labor Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day, with additional half-day considerations around major holidays. You can participate in an interactive rewards program where you earn points through health and engagement challenges and redeem them for gifts. A tool allowance program and a steel-toe allowance (once direct) support your work needs. The culture emphasizes teamwork, safety, and continuous improvement, creating an environment where motivated, hands-on professionals can thrive and grow.
Work Environment
You will work in a climate-controlled, clean, and well-organized facility designed for safety and efficiency. Large garage doors sized for service vans may be open at times, which can affect the temperature, but the shop uses large fans to maintain airflow and comfort. The facility is approximately 45,000 square feet, comparable in footprint to a large retail store with higher ceilings, and follows clearly marked yellow safety lines with equipment grouped and organized by type. Only sit-down forklifts are used to move equipment and materials, and you are expected to follow all safety protocols when working around them. The standard schedule runs Monday through Friday from approximately 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with occasional work up to about 5:15 p.m., and there are no overnight jobs and no weekend work. You receive a 30-minute lunch break, during which you may leave the facility if needed, as well as two 10-minute breaks during the day. Once you transition into a field service role, you will travel within a defined regional territory that includes areas such as Charlotte, Asheville, Black Mountain, Shelby, and nearby locations in South Carolina. Depending on work orders and operational needs, you may either take the service van home or return it to the facility at the end of the day. Dress expectations emphasize professional work attire appropriate for a clean, safety-focused shop environment, with support through tool and steel-toe allowances once you are a direct employee.
