Job Description

The General Laborer supports manufacturing operations by preparing workstations, handling materials, and operating a variety of industrial tools and equipment. This role requires strong attention to detail, the ability to follow instructions accurately, and the physical capability to perform hands-on tasks throughout the shift. You will contribute directly to the production of quality products while maintaining safety, cleanliness, and efficiency in a busy industrial environment.

Responsibilities

• Clean and prepare workstations at the start and end of shifts to ensure a safe, organized, and efficient work area.
• Load and unload raw materials, components, and finished products, including moving items to and from production lines or storage areas.
• Operate a variety of tools and machines such as resistance welders, mechanical riveters, pallet lifts, manual banding equipment, and other hand and power tools as directed.
• Follow instructions from higher-level employees, listening carefully and asking clarifying questions to ensure tasks are completed correctly and safely.
• Use manual dexterity and mechanical aptitude to handle tools, equipment, and materials with precision and care.
• Lift, move, and position heavy materials and equipment, maintaining safe lifting techniques and adhering to safety guidelines.
• Assist with general production tasks including assembly, packaging, picking, and packing of products according to specifications.
• Perform cleaning duties in the production area, including sweeping, removing debris, and maintaining overall cleanliness to support safety and quality standards.
• Measure materials accurately using tape measures and other basic measuring tools to ensure proper dimensions and fit.
• Support construction, carpentry, and concrete-related tasks as needed within the manufacturing environment.
• Load and unload items using pallet lifts or forklifts (if trained and authorized), ensuring safe material handling practices.
• Manage time effectively to organize work, prioritize tasks, and complete multiple assignments within a single shift.
• Work cooperatively with team members and supervisors, using strong interpersonal and communication skills to support a positive and productive work environment.
• Adhere to all safety, quality, and operational procedures while working in a loud, active industrial setting.

Essential Skills

• Experience with general labor tasks in manufacturing, construction, or production environments.
• Ability to safely operate hand tools and power tools, including basic carpentry and mechanical tools.
• Proficiency in using a tape measure and basic measuring tools to ensure accurate dimensions.
• Mechanical inclination, such as experience working on cars or with mechanical systems.
• Capability to perform heavy lifting and physically demanding tasks throughout the shift.
• Strong manual dexterity for operating tools, machines, and handling materials with precision.
• Effective time management skills to organize work and handle multiple tasks in a single shift.
• Good interpersonal and communication skills to follow instructions, ask questions, and explain work being performed.
• Comfort working on feet for most of the shift in an active industrial environment.
• Ability to follow safety and quality standards in a loud manufacturing facility.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Completion of shop, automotive, or wood classes in high school.
• Attendance at trade school or equivalent hands-on technical training.
• Prior work experience in a manufacturing, construction, general production, or warehouse environment.
• Experience with concrete work, carpentry, or basic construction tasks.
• Familiarity with forklift operation, loading and unloading procedures, and general material handling (if previously trained or certified).

Work Environment

This role is based in a busy manufacturing environment where employees stay active throughout the shift. The facility can be loud due to operating machinery, and temperatures inside the plant may vary with the seasons, becoming warmer during the summer months. Team members work on their feet in an industrial setting, handling materials and equipment while following established safety and quality standards. Appropriate industrial attire and adherence to safety guidelines are expected to ensure a safe and efficient workplace

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Thornton, IL.

The pay range for this position is $17.50 - $17.50/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
