School Boat CaptainReports to: Director of TransportationSalary: Daily rateTerms of Employment: 180 daysJob Summary:Qualifications:Certifications: US Coast Guard Master's license or equivalentExperience: Minimum of five years previous experience in boat operation and supervision, preferably in a school or youth program settingBe able to pass a drug screenSkills: Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills; ability to work with students of varying agesKnowledge: Familiarity with local waterways, boating regulations, and safety protocolsOther responsibilities may include:Dock and undock the vesselStand watch on the vesselInspect the vessel for safety and efficiencyMaintain the boat's systems, such as engines, winches, and fire extinguishersAssist with maritime rescue operationsReport violations of pilotage lawsPerform marine duties, such as checking for pollutantsEssential Duties:Vessel Operation: Safely operate school boats for educational outings, regattas, and extracurricular activitiesSafety Management: Ensure compliance with all safety regulations, including conducting safety briefings, maintaining life-saving equipment, and ensuring the crew and passengers wear life jacketsNavigation: Plan and execute navigation routes, accounting for weather conditions and tidesCrew Supervision: Train and supervise student crew members, promoting teamwork and skill developmentMaintenance: Oversee the maintenance and cleanliness of the vessels, performing routine checks and coordinating repairs as neededCommunication: Act as the primary point of contact for parents, school administration, and regulatory bodies regarding boating activitiesEmergency Preparedness: Develop and implement emergency procedures, ensuring all crew and participants are familiar with themEvent Coordination: Assist in organizing events and competitions, including scheduling and logisticsPerforms additional related duties as required by the supervisorPhysical Requirements: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
