Technician, Management Information Systems SY 2025-26 (NBOE)

765 Broad Street, Newark, New Jersey 07102 Roger Leon, Superintendent Technician, Management Information Systems Division of Information Technology (Pending availability of funds and Board of Education approval) The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the position of Technician, Management Information Systems within the Division of Information Technology. This title is governed by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission; a candidate will be placed as a provisional employee. Upon hire, the employee will be required to complete a 90‑day working test period during which performance will be evaluated. Successful completion is required to remain in the position as a permanent employee. Definition Under supervision of a supervisory official assigned to a program or operational unit having responsibility for a specific, existing information processing system operation, implements and monitors management information systems used to compile, store, retrieve, and process varied types of financial, program, or other information unique to the unit; operates computers and related equipment controls; analyzes and troubleshoots information processing program or system error conditions; updates and analyzes application software problems; performs system maintenance; OR under supervision of a supervisory official in a client/server environment, installs hardware and software on servers or workstations; performs basic and repetitive levels of help desk responsibilities; performs other related duties as required. Qualifications and Requirements Completion of sixty (60) semester hour credits from an accredited college or university. One (1) year of experience in work involving information systems, including responsibility for gathering, compilation, retrieval, maintenance, and distribution of financial, management, or other technical information in a public or private organization, or providing user support and solving user problems in a help desk or related environment. Drivers license valid in New Jersey if operation of a vehicle is necessary to perform essential duties. Applicants who do not possess the required education may substitute additional experience on a year‑for‑year basis with thirty (30) semester hour credits equal to one (1) year of experience. Twenty‑four (24) semester hour credits in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a closely related field may be substituted for up to two (2) years of the required education. Basic Functions and Responsibilities Acts as a communication link between departments and agency supervisors regarding technical assistance on detailed program queries about case information reporting. Monitors and performs prompt preparation of input documentation. Establishes effective lines of communication with agency supervisors to maintain quality standards of reported data and corrective actions. Develops file layouts for user applications. Determines distribution of output reports and assists agency supervisory personnel in interpreting results. Guides, schedules, and takes corrective action on source documents. Ensures proper batch controls are maintained by agencies. Identifies information needs by batch for agencies and the IT system that may require individualized agency changes to augment automated processing. Answers inquiries from system users and provides technical assistance in the use and application of system features. Provides support in the maintenance of client or endpoint software; installs, configures, and sets up printers and workstations; installs software programs. Responds to requests for assistance, identifying and correcting hardware, software, and printer problems. Troubleshoots application errors and incidents of a non‑complex nature. Identifies and resolves network problems; resets printers and/or passwords; answers routine inquiries. Prepares reports and maintains essential records, reports, and files. May assist in analyzing unit procedures and documentation (e.g., KEGs, Playbooks, SharePoint, training materials) and make recommendations to management regarding updates. May assist in periodic system checkouts and evaluations (disaster recovery exercises). May assist in reviewing and monitoring queues such as SN Requests/Incidents, calls, and incoming emails for missed inquiries when a supervisory official is not available. Will be required to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Performs other duties and tasks assigned by supervisor. Knowledge and Abilities Knowledge of office methods and procedures. Knowledge of information processing production and control functions and of workflow control techniques. Knowledge of client/server productivity aid packages. Ability to isolate causes and solve case information processing problems. Ability to communicate problems, causes, and recommended solutions to users and administrative personnel diplomatically. Ability to specialize in one functional area or perform control activities and communications over multiple processing applications/procedures. Ability to teach the operation and procedural requirements to other employees. Ability to use system diagnosis tools and network center productivity aids and software packages. Ability to communicate orally and in writing using easily understood language at all levels. Ability to prepare reports and work effectively with associates and supervisory officials. Ability to make necessary field and other tests, inspections, and investigations. Ability to learn quickly from oral and written directions and explanations. Ability to answer inquiries from system users, explain system functions, and provide technical assistance. Ability to maintain essential records, reports, and files. Ability to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position.
