Position description

The University of California Irvine (UCI) School of Medicine Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine invites applicants for a full-time faculty position to serve as a neuropathologist. The academic appointment may be at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor rank in the Health Sciences (HS) Clinical or Clinical X (senate) series, depending on experience and extent of research effort. Incumbents in the HS series are expected to provide patient care; teach fellows, residents, and medical students; perform public and University service; and contribute to scholarly activities. Incumbents in the Clinical X series are expected to conduct substantial research; provide patient care; teach fellows, residents, and medical students; and perform public and University service. Excellent teaching is an essential criterion for appointment in the Clinical X series. An academic appointment in the Clinical X series confers membership in the UCI Academic Senate.

Applicants must have fellowship training in neuropathology, hold an MD, DO, or MD/PhD degree, must be board-certified or board-eligible in Anatomic Pathology and Neuropathology, and eligible for a California medical license. In addition, the successful candidate is expected to have excellent communication and managerial skills, a strong interest in surgical neuropathology, a commitment to education, and a record in clinical and/or translational research. Expertise in digital pathology and artificial intelligence for clinical and research purposes will be viewed favorably. The candidate will be mainly responsible for clinical services in neuropathology including frozen section on-call duty, service on departmental and hospital committees, and teaching and mentoring of junior faculty, medical students, residents, and fellows. Additional interest in general autopsy pathology or cardiothoracic pathology would be beneficial.

This position will serve the laboratory needs of UCI Health, the only academic medical center in Orange County, which includes: the 400+ bed tertiary/quaternary care Douglas hospital located in the city of Orange; a new hospital complex on the Irvine campus; and several community hospitals and outpatient clinics throughout Orange County.

Founded in 1965, UCI is a top-10 public university in U.S. News & World Report. UCI is located in Orange County, the nation's 6th largest county and one of the most desirable locations to live in the US. The UCI School of Medicine is home to several NIH-funded centers, including the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center and Institute for Clinical and Translational Sciences, as well as the Digestive Health Institute, a flagship program of UCI Health. The School of Medicine along with the Samueli Institute for Integrative Health, Schools of Nursing, Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Population & Public Health make up the UCI College of Health Sciences.
