School Counselor

The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the position of School Counselor. Under direction, assists in planning, developing, and implementing a program of guidance services to promote the growth and development of each individual student. Counsels students individually, regarding educational and career choices, personal and social concerns, and the formulation of sound long-range plans. Consults with parents, staff, and community.

Qualifications and requirements include an appropriate New Jersey Department of Education Standard Certificate or eligible for an Emergency license as deemed necessary by A Master's Degree from an accredited college or university, unless otherwise specified by the New Jersey Department of Education, and New Jersey Permanent Student Personnel Services Certificate are required. Three (3) years successful teaching or counseling experience, preferred. Letters of recommendation, which should include one (1) from current principal or supervisor.

Basic functions and responsibilities include conducting early screening to assist in the identification of students with special needs and talents, students who are over-aged and under-credited, and students with physical and emotional challenges that have impacted their learning; and making referrals to appropriate services, and support programs or agencies. Providing counseling to potential dropouts to identify alternative academic and social support program options. Conducting interviews with students and families in preparation for making referrals to appropriate school placements. Communicating with feeding schools, providing information on school offerings, and assist students and families in selecting an appropriate match. Supporting on-going orientation activities for new students and their parents, beginning in September and continuing throughout the school year. Preparing and maintaining appropriate records and reports, as required. Assisting students in evaluating their abilities and interests, strengths, and weaknesses through use of records, tests, inventories, observations, consultations, and interviews. Assisting Enrollment staff in interpretation and use of student records and tests; interpreting same data for students and parents. Updating and confirming student graduation eligibility following a review of student transcripts. Administering and interpreting interest inventories and aptitude tests for students as they relate to educational and career planning; interpreting achievement test results for students, parents and staff. Informing students and parents about the NPS graduation requirements. Completing transcript/graduation audits and informing students and parents of the outcome. Consulting with parents and administrators to bring about better adjustment of students. Consulting and cooperating with other supportive services personnel to inform student and school-wide goal development and intervention planning. Participating in conferences conducted by the Student Support Team and Child Study Team. Cooperating with community agencies involved with students, such agencies as Aspira, Essex County Welfare, Division of Youth and Family Services, and the New Jersey State Employment Services to ensure continuity of services. Interviewing new students and recommending appropriate class placement. Reviewing student transcripts to assess progress toward graduation and develop a plan for course completion. Participating in professional learning committees, professional development workshops, in-service trainings, and administrative meetings to keep abreast of new trends and techniques in the field of guidance and youth development. Performing other duties and tasks assigned by Supervisor.

Salary Range: $72,250 - $114,750 Employment Period: Ten (10) Month Union Affiliation: N.T.U. (Newark Teacher's Union)
