Job ID: req4547 Employee Type: exempt full-time Division: Vaccine, Immunity and Cancer Directorate Facility: Frederick: ATRF Location: 8560 Progress Dr, Frederick, MD 21701 USA Program Description The Frederick National Laboratory, operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc., addresses urgent biomedical challenges in cancer, AIDS, drug development, and infectious disease response. The Vaccine, Immunity and Cancer Directorate (VICD) provides scientific leadership and laboratory infrastructure to study immune responses to Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines and other cancer preventive strategies. VICD is developing durable influenza vaccines, leading the development of highly reproducible, sensitive, and specific immunoassays for evaluating immune responses against seasonal influenza virus and other respiratory pathogens. Key Roles & Responsibilities Manage all laboratory activities of a scientific unit at VICD, following GCLP requirements. Lead the development, standardization, and validation of new and existing immune assays for viral antigens. Conduct research and development using state‑of‑the‑art technologies to evaluate humoral and cellular immune responses in collaboration with scientific partners. Design and oversee studies from inception to completion, ensuring timely progress. Review, analyze, and interpret complex immunological data. Manage project risk by proactively identifying issues and developing contingency plans. Develop SOPs, protocols, manuals, manuscripts, and other publications. Develop strategies to achieve scientific objectives efficiently and within budget. Interface with government officials at varying levels to coordinate logistical support for projects. Evaluate personnel performance and staff needs to maintain efficient laboratory functions. Collaborate with leadership to develop the unit budget and secure funding for future projects. Perform other related duties as assigned by laboratory leadership. Basic Qualifications To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the following knowledge, skills, and abilities: PhD degree from an accredited institution (foreign degrees evaluated for U.S. equivalency). Minimum of four (4) years of progressively responsible experience, including two (2) years in a leadership/managerial capacity. Deep knowledge of viral immunology, particularly influenza immunology. Ability to independently design, execute, and troubleshoot complex experiments. Technical expertise in advanced immunological assays (ELISA, antibody‑based serological assays, avidity/isotype characterization, multiplex platforms such as Luminex). Experience with T‑cell and B‑cell epitope mapping and functional analyses, including multiparameter flow cytometry. Proficiency in multicolor or spectral flow cytometry (panel design, acquisition, high‑dimensional analysis). Experience in cellular and molecular biology techniques (tissue culture, aseptic techniques, cell line maintenance, plasmid/virus‑like particle production, Western blot, virus neutralizing assays, plaque assays, PCR). Oversight of complex workflow involving flow cytometry and advanced cell culture systems. Current knowledge of emerging immunological technologies and immune profiling methods. Commitment to assay rigor, reproducibility, and compliance with GCLP/GLP standards. Flexibility to adopt and troubleshoot novel techniques. Ability to work independently and deliver high‑quality results on schedule. Strong prioritization skills to manage multiple projects. Experience managing and analyzing large datasets, with ability to interpret and communicate complex scientific data. Excellent record‑keeping and organizational skills. Exceptional critical thinking and commitment to scientific rigor. Proficiency in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills. Leadership skills and commitment to the mission. Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance. Preferred Qualifications Experience with government contracts, including Task Orders, NIH, NCI, or NIAID. Experience supporting or leading immunology components of clinical trials, including multi‑omics projects. Familiarity with integrated immune profiling approaches (serological, cellular, and molecular). Experience with robotics, electronic documentation systems, and LIMS. Experience in laboratories operating under GCLP/GMP/GLP/CLIA. Familiarity with human research subject requirements and regulations. Salary range is a guideline and will vary based on responsibilities, education, experience, skills, and internal equity.
