Job Title: Design Manager Job Description

The Design Manager guides home buyers through the entire new home selection and build process, combining design expertise, customer service, and light consultative sales. This role meets with clients in the design center, helps them choose finishes such as flooring, countertops, and cabinets, and then takes full ownership of the project communication, providing regular updates and ensuring the customer feels informed and supported at every stage of construction.

Responsibilities

• Meet with potential home buyers on-site and conduct consultative design and selection appointments.

• Explain available home options and features in a clear and persuasive manner to support the purchase decision, without performing outside sales.

• Guide customers through the complete selections process, including flooring, countertops, cabinets, and other interior and exterior finishes.

• Own the end-to-end client experience from initial meeting through completion of the build, ensuring consistent follow-through.

• Provide daily progress updates to clients, including photos and status reports, to keep them informed at every stage of construction.

• Maintain proactive, clear, and timely communication with clients via phone, email, and in-person meetings.

• Walk customers through key construction milestones and explain what to expect at each phase of the building process.

• Coordinate and manage client sign-offs at defined checkpoints, including floor plans, covenants, electrical walk-through, tape and texture, trim, and cabinets.

• Collaborate with internal teams involved in residential construction to ensure selections are accurately documented and executed.

• Resolve client questions and concerns promptly, demonstrating strong customer service and professionalism.

• Maintain detailed records of client selections, approvals, and communications to ensure a smooth and transparent process.

• Demonstrate complete ownership of the client relationship and project details, taking responsibility for outcomes and customer satisfaction.

Essential Skills

• Strong customer service orientation with a focus on delivering an excellent client experience.

• Sales skills with the ability to consult, persuade, and guide customers through purchase decisions in a non-aggressive manner.

• Knowledge or experience in residential construction or home-building processes.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills for clear, consistent updates to clients.

• Strong interpersonal and people skills to build trust and rapport with home buyers.

• Ability to manage and coordinate the full selections process for home finishes and features.

• Demonstrated ability to take complete ownership of projects and client relationships.

• Organizational skills to track multiple client selections, approvals, and milestones accurately.

• Attention to detail when reviewing floor plans, covenants, and construction checkpoints.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Background in sales, design, or a combination of both.

• Experience as a selection coordinator or in a similar role within residential construction or interior design.

• Comfort working directly with clients in a consultative, service-oriented environment.

• Ability to explain technical or construction-related concepts in simple, understandable terms.

• Strong visual and aesthetic sense to support clients in making design choices they will love.

Work Environment

You will interact regularly with residential construction teams and work within a structured build process that includes defined checkpoints and walk-throughs.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Sioux Falls, SD.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $30.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
