Position Summary Work for this position is generated through the need to provide steam, hot water, heating, and cooling for the University. This includes assisting Steam & Power Plant II and III personnel in their daily functions to provide adequate training opportunities. Under the general supervision of the Steam & Power Plant V and the direct supervision of Steam & Power Plant IV personnel, this position primarily cleans boilers, mechanical rooms, and related equipment such as pumps, supply fans, heating and air conditioning equipment, while assisting in the repair and maintenance of these systems. This position also provides physical labor for the movement of equipment and commodities, including hazardous materials such as sulfuric acid, caustic soda solution, sodium bisulfate, and other oxidizing agents. Flexibility in work shifts is required due to the 24/7/365 nature of this department’s essential services to the University. The individual in this position must ensure that safe work practices and procedures are followed at all times. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Scheduled Preventative Maintenance Perform preventative maintenance on various types of equipment (including HVAC equipment), including lubrication, cleaning air handling systems, and changing air filters. Read meters and record operational data. Perform unskilled labor incidental to the operation of mechanical equipment, including cleaning equipment, sweeping and mopping floors, and cleaning piping systems. Assist in routine repairs to plant, boiler, and mechanical equipment such as pumps, compressors, and fans. Detect and report equipment malfunctions. Assist in routine maintenance of mechanical equipment, including boilers, condensers, and related systems. Adhere to all safety and sanitation requirements. Boiler Room Operations Assist in boiler room operations by performing maintenance on high pressure steam boilers, including routine maintenance on boiler structures and feedwater treatment systems. Inspect, clean, dust, maintain, and lubricate plant equipment, including pumps, fans, compressors, condensers, feedwater heaters, filters, and similar equipment. Clean boilers and conveyor areas; clean and lubricate conveyor equipment; assist in material handling operations as required. Training Preparation Receive training to prepare for the duties of Steam & Power Plant II and/or Steam & Power Plant III positions. Assist higher level employees in manipulating valves and controls to regulate the flow of fuel and water. Receive training in approved methods for maintaining and repairing boilers and plant equipment; detect malfunctions and notify operators. Maintain Campus Softwater Systems Perform routine inspection and maintenance of campus infrastructure, including campus buildings, steam tunnels, and water distribution systems. Assist in the operation of plant equipment, pollution control systems, and water treatment laboratories. Perform general housekeeping duties including sweeping, organizing, labeling, and wiping down equipment. Replace indicator bulbs on control equipment. Remove byproducts from pollution control devices, as applicable. Other Duties as Assigned Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned. Minimum Required Qualifications (Civil Service) 1. High school diploma or equivalent. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) (Civil Service) Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses repair, and maintenance; power plant equipment, steam-generating equipment, and pollution-control devices. Knowledge of systems such as word processing, managing files and records, and other office procedures and terminology. Ability and willingness to follow both oral and written directions. Ability to work with others. Ability to tell when something is wrong or likely to go wrong. Ability to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects. Ability to use your abdominal and lower back muscles to support part of the body repeatedly or continuously over time without fatiguing. Ability to listen and understand information presented by others and to communicate information and ideas so others can understand. Ability to work in conditions with wide variation of temperature exposure. Ability to work in extreme environmental conditions while adhering to safe work practices.
