Position Details Title: Customer Service Clerk I Job Type: Full Time Posting Type: Public Number of Vacancies: 1 Department: PUBLIC UTILITIES Division: PUB UTIL BUS/CUST SVC Requisition Number: 2026293 Schedule: Monday thru Friday; 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Location: Chesapeake, VA Driving Requirement: Never Pay Grade: GE02 Pay Basis: Semi-Monthly Advertised Salary: $35,528 – $52,848 Hours: 40 per week Job Summary The City of Chesapeake Department of Public Utilities is seeking a customer‑focused professional to join the Customer Service team as a Customer Service Clerk I. The role involves assisting residents and businesses with utility account inquiries, processing transactions, and ensuring a positive customer experience through professionalism, collaboration, and service excellence. Responsibilities Assist customers in person and by phone with utility account inquiries and service requests. Provide information on utility billing, payments, services, and City policies and procedures. Process utility account transactions, payments, service orders, and account updates accurately and efficiently. Enter, update, and maintain customer account information within the utility billing system. Prepare and maintain records, reports, and related documentation. Process incoming correspondence and route information as appropriate. Access available information sources to answer customer questions and provide assistance. Collaborate with team members and other City departments to provide excellent customer service. Perform related clerical and customer service duties as assigned. Required Qualifications High school diploma or GED with one year of college education (or equivalent combination of education and experience). Minimum of three months of related full‑time equivalent experience. Strong customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills. Attention to detail and accuracy when handling account information and financial transactions. Ability to learn policies, procedures, and utility billing processes. Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast‑paced environment. Experience with computerized systems and standard office software. Previous customer service, cash handling, bookkeeping, or administrative support experience is preferred.
