Respiratory Care Practitioner II / Flat Rate / WEO (harmonized) – St. Francis Medical Center Job Summary The Respiratory Care Practitioner II is responsible for providing respiratory care through patient assessment, planning, intervention, education, and evaluation. The role includes performing all respiratory care procedures such as oxygen and aerosolized medication delivery, ventilator care, bronchial hygiene therapy, diagnostic services, and both patient and staff education. Essential Functions Serve as the shift “Charge Therapist” to ensure adequate staffing, assign staff, modify assignments, provide meal coverage, and handle call offs. Assist physicians with procedures such as bronchoscopy, transtracheal catheter insertion, tracheotomy intubation, tracheostomy tube changes, and invasive monitoring. Perform CPR including closed chest compressions and airway management in accordance with the AHA ACLS protocol. Conduct therapeutic procedures for airway maintenance, using appropriate airways and documenting in patient and departmental records. Select, assemble, monitor, and evaluate mechanical ventilators, correct malfunctions, maintain cleanliness, and determine appropriate use. Perform pulmonary function tests (PFTs) as needed. Serve as a preceptor to new team members and/or students. Assess patient’s physical status through inspection, palpation, auscultation, percussion, behavior, and existing data. Administer treatments per physician orders, explain goals to patients, and modify protocols based on response. Recommend appropriate therapy methods such as IPPB, aerosol therapy, postural drainage, ultrasonic nebulizer, incentive spirometry, metered dose inhalers, and spacers. Set up and maintain oxygen therapy modes, ensuring adequate PaO2 levels. Administer intermittent positive pressure breathing or aerosol therapy, monitoring vital signs and symptom relief. Perform postural drainage, vibration, and percussion to clear bronchial secretions, checking orders and imaging. Instruct patients and families on incentive spirometry, inhaler use, postural drainage, oxygen, ventilator care, and home aerosol therapy. Obtain sputum for culture and sensitivity or perform airway clearance via coaching, mucolytics, aerosol therapy, or suctioning. Interpret laboratory values, perform arterial punctures and blood gas analyses, and understand ABG interpretation. Conduct EKGs, comprehend electronic monitoring, lead placement, and basic arrhythmias. Maintain all respiratory therapy equipment and supplies. Respond to cardiopulmonary resuscitations and participate as required. Education Bachelor’s Degree related to Respiratory Therapy, Health Care Administration, or Business Administration (preferred). Required Licensing & Certifications Current Respiratory Care License in the state of employment (required). National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) credential (required). Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) (preferred). BLS Basic Life Support – American Heart Association (required). ACLS Advanced Cardiac Life Support – American Heart Association or Red Cross (required). PALS Pediatric Advanced Life Support – American Heart Association (required). NRP Neonatal Resuscitation Program – AAP/AWHONN (preferred). Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist (CPFT) (preferred). Registered Pulmonary Function Technologist (RPFT) (preferred). ACCS Adult Critical Care Specialist – NBRC (preferred). Valid driver’s license for home care or DME duties (required). Experience Two years of experience as a Respiratory Care Professional (required). Skills & Abilities Strong interpersonal and communication skills with patients, families, physicians, and staff. Ability to work with diverse individuals and provide excellent customer service. Strong organizational, time‑management, oral, and written communication skills. Accountability and willingness to receive and provide feedback. Knowledge of non‑invasive respiratory therapy equipment such as oximeters and end‑tidal CO₂ analyzers. Proficiency with therapeutic procedures including CPAP/BiPAP, jet aerosol, oxygen therapy, incentive spirometry, chest physiotherapy, pulse oximetry, high‑flow oxygen, continuous aerosols, ventilator management, and diagnostic testing. Understanding of EKGs, electronic monitoring, lead placement, and basic arrhythmias. Arterial blood gas punctures and testing. Airway maneuvers, bedside pulmonary function, patient assessment, education, chest suction equipment, and chest X‑ray interpretation.
