At Houston Methodist, the Artist‑Center for Performing Arts Medicine (CPAM) position is responsible for creating a welcoming, holistic, motivating and inspiring environment of care for our patients, guests and employees. The role involves creating or performing in classical, cultural, popular and traditional genres appropriate for the healing environment, performing with high professional proficiency in public areas throughout the Houston Methodist system. The position aims to relieve anxiety, offer rejuvenation and support the healing journey of patients and caregivers, while adjusting music selections and volume based on audience feedback, safety precautions and acoustic constraints. It maintains professional boundaries and collaborates with departments such as Security, Spiritual Care and Guest Services when needed. FLSA STATUS Non‑exempt QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION High School diploma or equivalent education (examples include: GED, verification of homeschool equivalency, partial or full completion of post‑secondary education, etc.) EXPERIENCE Professional artist with five years of experience An audition/interview will be required SKILLS AND ABILITIES Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through on‑going skills, competency assessments and performance evaluations Proficiency in speaking, reading and writing English necessary to perform essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members and co‑workers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS PEOPLE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Exhibits sensitivity to surroundings and approachability to listeners/viewers. Performs or creates in a wide variety of classical, cultural, popular and traditional genres to meet the goals of the position. Performs or creates for hospital events, as determined by the schedule coordinated with management. Performs or creates while taking a 15‑minute break every hour. QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Contributes to a safe working environment with respect to sound levels, equipment and overhead announcements. Acts accordingly, displaying sensitivity to the needs of doctors, nurses or chaplains when discussions are taking place with patients and families within close proximity. FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Use resources efficiently; does not waste supplies. Self‑motivated to independently manage time effectively and prioritizes department daily tasks, minimizing incidental overtime. GROWTH/INNOVATION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Responsible for active development of artistic repertoire. Supports hospital and department goals and offers innovative solutions through participation in department projects. Assumes responsibility for self‑growth and development by participating in in‑services programs and continuing education.
