The Position We are seeking a Lead Camp Counselor for Brooklyn Friends School’s Summer Camp program, Camp Brooklyn. Days and hours: Monday‑Friday, 8:00 am‑3:00 pm, from Monday, June 22, 2026 to Friday, July 31, 2026. All Camp Brooklyn colleagues will also attend Camp Orientation and training on Thursday, June 18 and Saturday, June 20. Lead Camp Counselors will work under the direction and supervision of the Camp Director. Primary Responsibilities Oversee one group of campers Supervise the counselors in your group Plan, lead and implement activities for camp participants Supervise campers and ensure their safety, development, growth, skill achievement and general well‑being Organize and lead various small and large group activities Maintain accurate camp records Know and understand all emergency procedures associated with the camp program Actively encourage the active participation of all students Manage classroom behavior, modeling and supporting prosocial behavior Maintain warm and open communication with families Behavior Management Establish and maintain appropriate levels of authority with students Consistently implement age‑appropriate behavioral standards Be observant and proactive Be attentive to student participation, engagement and behavior Encourage age‑appropriate autonomy Use direct, affirming and constructive language with students Discipline in a positive, firm, and age‑appropriate manner Management of Classroom Space Maintain order with classroom materials and personal items Ensure that toys, games and other materials are treated respectfully and put back properly at the end of the day Tasks and Meetings Participate in daily meetings with camp staff Perform any reasonable task deemed necessary by the Camp Director Assist with maintaining materials and supplies Communication Be direct, accessible and reliable when communicating with campers, families, and other colleagues Be warm and professional with families Keep Camp Director in the communication loop, checking in regarding parent conversations and health issues Seek clarity to resolve conflicts Maintain appropriate confidentiality Report suspected child abuse/neglect to the Camp Director according to Mandated Reporting Guidelines Check BFS email daily to stay up‑to‑date on important communications School Policies Be familiar with school policies as defined in the Camp Employee Handbook, including but not limited to: Complete all onboarding requirements prior to the start of employment Adhere to expected hours Report absence promptly, ideally the night before or as early as possible on the day of absence Notify supervisor of lateness or absence in a timely fashion Immediately notify supervisor of any changes in contact information Qualifications and Characteristics Sought Must be at least 18 years of age Experience working with children in a camp, youth program, recreation, or a related field. An Associate’s degree or higher is preferred. CPR/First Aid certification is required Ability to commit to the full six weeks of camp Physical Requirements of the Job Must be able to physically navigate comfortably in a passenger bus and at trip venues Must be able to lift and carry small children up to 20 lb. in the event of an emergency Must be able to be outdoors in hot weather and in spaces that are subject to variable temperatures and humidity Union Status Union Status : Non-Union Salary Range Salary Range : $25 per hour #J-18808-Ljbffr National Association of Independent Schools
